Improved dialog between doctor and patient about the subject of sex might bring much-needed help to men who are seriously ill and also suffering from erectile dysfunction.
A recently published study found that men with cancer and other serious illnesses are less likely to seek treatment for erectile dysfunction than men who are generally healthy or only mildly ill.
While it might be speculated that seriously ill men are putting all their energy into treating their primary illness, in doing so they overlook the important contribution that sex makes to their overall quality of life.
The study, conducted by Slovenian researchers Dejan Bratus and Tina Bratus, was first published online in the International Journal of Impotence Research on April 11, 2019.
500 Men Divided into 3 Groups
The researchers questioned roughly 500 men, each of whom had recently paid a visit to a doctor’s office. Based on the nature of their overall health, these men were divided into three groups.
The first group was made up of roughly 180 men who had no serious underlying illnesses but had visited the doctor for short-term health issues or preventive reasons. The health complaints of men in this group typically included backaches, cold and flu, gastrointestinal problems, or urinary infections.
The second group, the largest at about 250, was made up of men with “mild underlying disease” but no serious complications. Typical illnesses being treated in this group were anxiety, depression, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
Men in Group 3 Seriously Ill
The third group, roughly 70 in number, consisted of men with “severe chronic or malignant illnesses,” including both cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
While nearly 90 percent of the men in the first two groups said that they would seek treatment for ED if they experienced symptoms, only 70 percent of the men in the third group said they would do the same.
The authors of the study contend that even seriously ill men might be more likely to opt for ED treatment if doctors were more willing to broach this sensitive topic and offer whatever help is needed.
Doctors Could Help
Lead author Dejan Bratus, a urologist affiliated with the University Medical Center in Maribor, Slovenia, said, “Improving our [doctors’] approach could result in a large proportion of men maintaining a satisfactory sexual life, which is an important part of overall wellbeing.”
Echoing the findings of the Slovenian study, Kathryn Flynn of the Medical College of Wisconsin told Reuters.com that similar studies in the United States have produced virtually the same conclusions. She noted that “sexual function is important to people, but patient-provider communication about sex is often lacking.”
ED Drugs Can Help
Among the men most directly affected by their underlying illnesses or the therapies involved in the treatment of those illnesses are men with prostate cancer. However, many of those men who are suffering temporary — or even permanent — impotence because of prostate cancer have been able to find ED relief through the use of oral ED drugs such as Viagra.
