ED medication
These little blue pills look like the real thing, but they are actually counterfeit Viagra tablets.

Polish law enforcement authorities recently swooped down on a counterfeit drug factory in the north-central city of Bydgoszcz, according to an Associated Press report. From that factory and others associated with this counterfeiting operation, authorities reportedly seized roughly 100,000 fake Viagra pills and an estimated 430,000 doses of counterfeit doping substances, mostly steroids. These ersatz medications were destined to be sold online to unsuspecting buyers around the world.

This massive raid and others like it in the past point up the very real dangers of dropping your guard when you’re shopping for Viagra or other ED medications online. Actually, it should send a chill down the back of any health consumer who has ordered prescription drugs on the Internet from suppliers about which the consumers actually knew little or nothing.

14 People Arrested

In connection with the Polish Viagra counterfeiting operation, police also arrested 14 people said to be involved in the scam, which authorities said was the biggest maker of fake medications that they have seen up until now.

For those who feel they’ve dodged a bullet by forgoing prescription ED medications in favor of natural ED remedies, also ordered online, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a wake-up call only a month before the Polish raids. Although they were advertised online as 100 percent natural remedies containing pure herbal ingredients, these products were all found to contain varying amounts of sildenafil citrate, a chemical compound that is the active ingredient in Viagra.

What’s the Problem?

So what’s the problem with that, you might ask. I’m getting the real thing for the price of an herbal remedy. The problem, the FDA points out, is there is no way of knowing how much of that active ingredient might be present in any single dose of the so-called natural ED remedy. Of course, the very presence of sildenafil in these pills belies their claim to be all-natural.

Men may feel that taking such an herbal remedy for erectile dysfunction avoids any adverse interaction with nitrate-based drugs they may be taking at the same time. But the unlabeled presence of sildenafil citrate in these herbal remedies could cause serious, even life-threatening consequences if taken at the same time as nitrates, prescription drugs that are used routinely in the treatment of angina, among other things.

ED medication
Whether on the roadside in a distant land or on the Internet, health consumers need to be wary of so-called natural ED remedies.

Brand Names Identified

Among the natural remedies targeted by the FDA were concoctions sold under the brand names Golden Roots, Libigirl, Power Spring XXX Oral Liquid, Shangai Ultra X, Super Bull 6000, Super Shangai, Weili or Yi Pao Dao, and Ziyinzhuangyang. Given that the U.S. drug regulatory agency has blown the whistle on these brand-name natural remedies, they are likely to begin showing up under new brand names but with the same potentially dangerous ingredients.

Interestingly, the fake Viagra seized in the Polish raids in September 2016 contained ingredients that were sourced primarily from China, according to reports from Poland’s Police Central Bureau of Investigation.

Fakes Look Like the Real Thing

Counterfeiters turn out some surprisingly authentic-looking copies of the medications they’re passing off as the real thing. But as real as they may look, you have no way of knowing just what ingredients have been thrown into them. In some cases, such counterfeits have been shown to consist of ground-up drywall, potentially toxic blue dyes, and, as mentioned earlier, varying levels of sildenafil citrate. Too little of the sildenafil, and it’s doubtful the pill will have the desired effects for a man suffering from full-blown ED. Too much, and the effects could be dangerous.

A big chunk of the output from the Polish counterfeiting operation was said to be destined for the British market, which seemingly has an insatiable appetite for ED medications. In a May 2016 blog posting at the website of LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, writer Emily Hunt painted a grim picture of the scope of the counterfeit ED drug problem in the United Kingdom.

Fake Viagra Seizures in UK

Hunt reported that the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, roughly equivalent to the FDA in this country, seized more than £11 million (roughly US$16 million, as of May 2016) in counterfeit Viagra in 2015 raids across the U.K. This, according to MHRA, was the largest amount of unlicensed ED medications ever seized. The counterfeit Viagra accounted for more than 90 percent of all the counterfeit medications seized in the United Kingdom in 2015.

Interviewed by Hunt, Caroline Pilot, M.D., said that the problem of fake Viagra extends far beyond the United Kingdom, noting that Pfizer, Viagra’s developer and manufacturer, has identified counterfeit versions of their little blue pill in 111 countries. Dr. Pilot noted that because the production of counterfeit Viagra is completely unregulated — not to mention illegal — it is often produced in “medically questionable circumstances. The locations in which the drugs are produced are often unhygienic and may expose the drugs to toxic chemicals.”

‘A Horrifying Cocktail’

Furthermore, said Dr. Pilot, fake Viagra tablets that have been seized and analyzed have been found to contain “a horrifying cocktail of ingredients,” including road paint, detergent, and talcum powder. Dr. Pilot also acknowledged that many of the counterfeit Viagra tablets seized did contain sildenafil citrate, ranging in strength from far too little to be effective to dangerously high levels.

Dr. Pilot also noted that many users of ED medications in the United Kingdom and elsewhere don’t suffer from impotence but are taking the drugs for recreational purposes — to increase their staying power or ability to regain an erection after ejaculation. Those who happen to take counterfeit Viagra with excessively high levels of sildenafil may build up such a tolerance to the drug that the real thing will have little effect on them in later years should they actually develop erectile dysfunction.

Generic Viagra Available in UK, Europe

Actually, reasonably priced generic formulations of Viagra are already legally available in the United Kingdom and much of the European Union, where Pfizer’s patent on the medication ran out a couple of years ago.
American men looking for less expensive alternatives to Viagra will have to wait until late next year, when Teva Pharmaceuticals — and possibly Mylan — are expected to begin selling generic Viagra under agreements struck with Pfizer. In the meantime, those who would like to ensure that they are getting the real thing should consider buying their Viagra online from eDrugstore.com, part of the Secure Medical chain of online drugstores.
