Losing excess weight can help to improve your erectile function and overall health. However, using certain detox diets and cleanses as part of your weight-loss strategy could be counterproductive in the long run.

Shedding those extra pounds to bring your weight down to a normal level for your stature can help to improve erectile function and also reduce your chances of developing erectile dysfunction. Doing that the sensible way by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can also improve your overall health.

However, taking extreme measures to lose excess weight can sometimes leave you in worse shape than you were before you began your weight-loss campaign. And among those weight-loss programs that can do more harm than good are some of the current cleanses and detoxes that are the latest fad. Of particular concern are detox and cleanse products or regimens that promise fast results with little or no real effort on your part.

But Choose Wisely

This blog post isn’t intended as a blanket condemnation of all cleanses and detoxes, but it is designed as a warning to those who blindly adopt some of these tools as part of their weight-loss efforts. Some of those currently on the market or recommended by word of mouth can be hazardous to your health.

Cleanses and detoxes purportedly offer a relatively quick and easy way “to remove toxins from your body, lose weight, or promote health,” according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

What Research Has Found

But what does the research say about the effectiveness of these strategies? NCCIH cites a 2015 review that found no compelling research to endorse detoxification diets as a way to eliminate toxins from the body or to attain weight-loss goals. The center also points to a 2017 review that found juicing and detox diets can lead to quick weight loss because initial calorie intake is so low. However, that same review found that the excess pounds were quick to return once a normal diet was resumed.

On the plus side, some so-called detox drinks can be very healthy even though they’re unlikely to truly rid your body of all the toxins that may be present. An article at MedicalNewsToday.com explains that most folks today don’t get nearly the amount of fruits and vegetables that’s recommended as part of a truly healthy diet.

Detox Drinks and Smoothies

Detox drinks or smoothies that contain plenty of these foods are a good way to get more fruits and vegetables. And all you’ll need to whip up such nutrition-packed treats is a food processor or a juicer. However, a diet — even a temporary diet — that relies solely on such drinks deprives you of the protein and fat that should be part of a well-rounded diet.

Other forms of detox can include liver detox, food restriction or even fasting, and colon cleanse, according to Healthline.com. California-based dietitian Ashley Reaver points out that the liver is well equipped to rid the body of most toxins on its own. To ensure strong liver function, it makes more sense to eat a diet that combines both raw and cooked fruits and vegetables, soluble fiber like beans, grains, and nuts, and limited alcohol intake.

Food Restriction

Food restriction involves the systematic exclusion of certain foods from your diet to see if your body functions better and less problematically without that food. The danger arises when too many foods are excluded at once, according to Reaver.

Instead of colon cleanses, Reaver recommends a diet high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, which together can help to eliminate excess waste. And no drastic colon cleanse procedure should be undertaken except at the direction of a physician.

Many men who use Viagra or one of the other oral ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors find that they can save both time and money by ordering those medications online from eDrugstore.com. Based in Tempe, Arizona, eDrugstore has been in business since the late 1990s and sells only FDA-approved medications. To learn more, visit its Erectile Dysfunction page.
