More daylight hours makes it easier for people to get outside and soak up sunshine, which helps the body produce vitamin D. Men with vitamin D deficiencies are likelier to experience erection problems.

Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” for good reason. It turns out that your body makes most of its vitamin D from sunshine, so if your doctor tells you that your blood levels of the vitamin are low, you probably should get a bit more sun exposure.

And for men, having healthy levels of vitamin D is particularly important, because those who are deficient in the sunshine vitamin have a higher risk of erectile dysfunction, according to a 2016 study.

Of course, your need for time in the sun must be carefully balanced with the threat posed by overexposure, which can lead to skin cancer. For people with fair skin, exposing as much skin as possible for 10 to 15 minutes a day in the midday sun is probably adequate. Those with very dark skin may need up to two hours in the sun to get their daily quota of vitamin D.

What the Study Revealed

The study exploring the link between vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of ED was conducted by a U.S. research team and published in the September 2016 issue of “Atherosclerosis.” Researchers analyzed health data from 3,390 men who were 20 years old or older.

They found that men who were deficient in vitamin D had a significantly higher risk of ED than those who had adequate levels or higher of the sunshine vitamin.

Because of the need to carefully balance your sun exposure with the risk of sun-related skin damage and skin cancer, you should probably consult your doctor or dermatologist about the best way to get sun exposure with minimal risk.
