Men who are anxious to preserve and improve erectile function might do well to get started by exercising. A recent University of Texas study suggests that regular exercise tends to lead to healthier eating habits.

Sick and tired of your sedentary lifestyle and its adverse effects on your health? Afraid it’s responsible for those erection problems you’ve been experiencing lately? If so, it’s time to trade in some of your bad habits for healthy lifestyle choices. And a wise first choice would be to adopt a regular routine of physical activity.

A ringing endorsement of the importance of exercise comes from a recent University of Texas study that found that regular physical activity leads to better eating habits. Exercise and a healthy diet are two of the three pillars of health, the third being sleep.

Nearly 2,700 Young Adults Studied

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin based their findings on observations of 2,680 sedentary young adults who were neither exercising nor dieting prior to the beginning of the study.

After a few weeks of regular exercise, study participants began to opt for healthier foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats, and turn their backs on unhealthy options, such as fried foods and sugar-laden beverages. This occurred naturally although all participants had been instructed to make no significant dietary changes during the study.

Although the UT study did not look at the reasons for this shift in eating habits, earlier research has found that exercise’s effects on dopamine levels seem to reduce animals’ desire for fatty foods. The study was published in a January 2019 issue of the International Journal of Obesity.

In an article posted at PsychologyToday.com, neuroscientist David J. Linden notes that exercise has “a dramatic antidepressive effect.” The so-called runner’s high can actually result from any program of sustained physical activity and is not limited to running. Accompanying such feelings of euphoria seems to be a reduction in unhealthy cravings, which might help to explain the natural shift to better eating habits.
