A recent study conducted by researchers at the New England Research Institute of 593 men has determined that men who make significant lifestyle changes in their middle ages may be too little too late to reverse loss of erection. However, while researchers said that that cutting down on smoking, drinking, and over eating won’t have any major effects, they stressed that daily physical activity could have a positive effect on loss of erection.

While conducting a study on male aging, researchers branched out to determine the effects of positive lifestyle changes and it’s effect on loss of erection. 593 men with no history of loss of erection were gathered, and the researchers charted their progress over an eight year period. During this time, researchers gathered information on the subjects body mass index, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, and physical activity. To track the occurrences of loss of erection, men were subjected to a self administered sexual activity questionnaire.

After this 8 year period, researchers compiled the data on the subjects and determined:

  • A sedentary lifestyle and obesity were associated with a greater risk for loss of erection. This risk stayed the same even if the subjects ended up losing weight.

  • Changes in smoking and alcohol consumption did not appear to affect the risk of loss of erection.

  • Men who lived active lifestyles or who initiated physical activity in the follow up period were normally at lower risk for loss of erection issues.

Discussing their findings, researchers concluded that the adverse effects of smoking, drinking, and over eating will seriously increase the risk of loss of erection by the time a man reaches his mid-life. However, remaining or becoming physically active can severely reduce the risk of loss of erection problems.
