Levitra and Cialis are both popular erectile dysfunction medications. However, they differ primarily in their duration of action. Your preferences on timing will ultimately determine which is the best choice for you.
This year alone, hundreds of thousands of men around the world will face the reality that they are no longer able to achieve an erection on their own. They will join millions more who are already suffering from erectile dysfunction — the inability to get and keep an erection suitable for intercourse. But what are the causes of ED and what, if anything, can be done to help these men regain erectile function?
Doctors agree on several causative factors that can be responsible for ED:
- recreational usage of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs
- presence of an underlying illness, such as diabetes or prostate cancer
- circulatory issues, such as uncontrolled blood pressure or heart disease
- hereditary issues that were passed along in DNA
Fortunately, after many years and millions of dollars in medical research, the key to relieve suffering in those with ED is an enzyme found in the body called phosphodiesterase. There are dozens of subtypes of phosphodiesterase, but the one found in the penis is named phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5).
This enzyme regulates the blood flow in the arteries that supply the penis and is essential to achieve an erection. When there is an abundance of PDE5 in the vascular system, the arteries can remain constricted, limiting the flow of blood to the penis and ultimately making it difficult to get an erection in some predisposed patients.
What Are Levitra and Cialis?

Like Viagra (sildenafil citrate), Levitra (vardenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil) are members of the family of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. When introduced into the blood stream, they temporarily disable the PDE5 enzyme, which allows for the arterioles in the penis to relax more easily. Taking a PDE5 inhibitor thus makes achieving an erection a less daunting process for those who suffer from ED. Once the erection is over and the medication passes through the system, the PDE5 enzyme once again will be produced and regulated naturally in the body.
How Long Does Each Last?
Introduced in 1998, Viagra was the first successful oral ED medication on the market. An almost immediate success, Viagra was followed by Levitra and Cialis, both of which were introduced in the latter half of 2003. While both Levitra and Cialis drugs work in the same way, they last a very different amount of time in the system. Levitra takes effect in about 30 to 60 minutes and can stay in the system for up to six hours. Levitra has also been proven to treat illness-related ED where other treatment options have failed. Cialis lasts in the system for an incredible 24 to 36 hours, which allows those suffering from ED a larger window of opportunity to enjoy sexual activity.
How Do I Know I Have ED?
Almost every man has had difficulty on occasion getting — and keeping — an erection. However, if the problem persists and becomes a pattern, it’s time to get some professional advice.
Here are four signs that you might have ED:
1. You simply cannot achieve an erection.
2. Your erections are not hard enough for intercourse.
3. Your erections do not last the duration of sex.
4. Your erections are infrequent and only sometimes occur.
Can I Get a Prescription Online?
Longtime online facilitator eDrugstore sells a full range of ED medications, including both brand-name and generic products. If you already have a doctor’s prescription, you can fax it or scan and email it along with your order. Alternatively, eDrugstore can set up a complimentary online consultation with a licensed U.S. physician who can authorize a prescription if appropriate. This saves you the time and money you’d spend on a doctor’s visit and a subsequent trip to the local pharmacy. To learn more, visit eDrugstore’s Erectile Dysfunction page.
