Just a Two-Mile Walk Reduces Erectile Dysfunction

If you’ve talked to your doctor about erectile dysfunction (ED), you probably already know that exercise can help. But don’t assume you’ve got to run a daily 5K or work out at the gym for two hours after work every evening.

The Research

Two separate studies have come to the same conclusion about exercise and ED.

A study published in Urology looked at 600 men who initially reported no erectile dysfunction issues. The researchers re-evaluated the men after nine years and found that those who kept exercising over the nine years had fewer issues with ED than those who didn’t exercise.

A second study, published in the American Journal of Cardiology, looked at men who had a recent acute myocardial infarction, of whom 84% reported previous ED. Those with a low cardiovascular risk were divided into two groups. One group was assigned to home-based walking, while the control group received the usual care.

A month later, the men were re-evaluated for both sexual function and functional capacity based on a six-minute walk test. The results? While the control group had a 9% increase in ED, the walking group had a 71% decrease.

The Lesson

Walking is an effective means of maintaining sexual health for many men, and it doesn’t need to be done at warp speed. A moderately brisk walk should take the average man between 30 and 45 minutes, assuming a speed of about 3 m.p.h.

So why is walking so beneficial for men looking to prevent ED? By improving blood flow, walking helps reduce the formation of plaque and lessens the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also increases vascular nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the penis.

On the flip side, erectile dysfunction can be a symptom of reduced blood flow, allowing it to serve as an early warning sign of heart disease.

Of course, walking won’t prevent or treat ED for every man. But prescription ED drugs like Cialis can help most men regain sexual function.
