You didn’t think there was anything scarier than a financial downturn, right? But what about a sex recession?

What is the Sex Recession?

News of millennials abstaining from sex emerged in Japan, where, according to their National Fertility Study, 10% of young men in their 30s were virgins. In the United States, studies suggest similar trends, with teenagers having less sex now than their parents a generation ago.

Around one in six Americans in their early twenties are still virgins. But it’s not just young adults abstaining from sex. Older adults are also having sex less than they were in years past. At a time where we can practically get sex on demand (looking at you, Tinder), what is contributing to this decline in coitus?

As it turns out, there are several factors that experts point to for this dry spell.

Millennials, AKA Generation Cockblock?

  1. We still live with our parents. Millennials believe renting is a better option than owning a home, but that doesn’t mean it is affordable. In some cities, rent rose as much as 28% in the last 5 years, making our childhood bedroom look a lot more attractive. Unfortunately, rooming with mom and dad is a buzzkill for your sex life.
  2.  We’ve got money troublesWe’re burdened by student debt, have trouble finding employment, and our earnings aren’t keeping up with the cost of living. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for date nights out or a Match.com subscription.
  3.  We’re anxious and depressed. We’re living with our parents and drowning in debt, so this one shouldn’t come as a surprise. Millennials are seeking counseling more than previous generations, and more than 10% report experiencing anxiety and/or depression.

Other explanations given for our lack of sex drive include being glued to our smartphones, putting our careers first, antidepressant use, and sleep deprivation. Not to mention, sexual dysfunctions like erectile dysfunction (ED), can significantly affect sex lives. Not all abstinence should be viewed negatively, though. Women are feeling more empowered to say no and, hopefully, their partners are respecting their wishes.

All Hope is Not Lost

If this so-called sex recession mirrors economic ones, then there will be ups and downs in the frequency of sexual intercourse. It’s also important to remember that there is no ‘normal’ amount of sex couples should be having. Also, more sex doesn’t necessarily mean a happier sex life.

But for couples that want to have more sex, that are struggling with sexual dysfunction, medications like Viagra may be able to help. And for those that are satisfied with the amount, or lack thereof, of sex they’re having, don’t worry. Our sex lives shouldn’t be judged against statistics.
