Erectile Dysfunction Treatments from the Middle Ages and Beyond
Until the mid-1900s, there wasn’t much a guy could do if he suffered from erectile dysfunction (ED), but that didn’t keep men from trying.

From the Middle Ages on, there were some seriously creepy concoctions and “cures” that desperate men (and perhaps, their wives) were willing to experiment with in order to get rid of their erectile dysfunction. Here are some of the craziest attempts.

Eating parts of animals

Talk about being bird brained! In the 11th century, men were convinced that eating the brains of male sparrows mixed with billy goat grease and filberts would cure their erectile dysfunction.

Wolf dong, anyone? In the 13th century, men believed they could cure their erectile dysfunction by chewing on pieces of roasted wolf penis.

Drinking poison

The mid- to late-1800s habit of drinking a mix of orange peel and ginger syrup doesn’t sound so bad … until you mix in the phosphoric acid and a grain of strychnine.

Rubbing goo on your penis

In 1700 BC, men with erectile function tried smearing a mixture of honey, ground acacia leaves and Christ’s thorn on their penis in hopes of curing impotence.

Shooting up with pig’s balls

Not all vermin are useless. In the 1890s, some men tried to fight their erectile dysfunction by injecting themselves with liquefied guinea pig testicles.

Shocking your penis and other sensitive parts

Does having erectile dysfunction suck? Not as much as applying an electric current to your penis, scrotum, perineum and spine. That’s exactly what men did in the 1880s with the hope that one round would be plenty.

Cradling your testicles with Radium

Men with erectile dysfunction at the turn of the 20th century could always try the advertised Radium-laced suspensory to cradle their testicles in the glow of alpha rays. Basically, men with erectile dysfunction wore radioactive jock straps in hopes of curing their ED.

Luckily for modern men with erectile dysfunction, we now have prescriptions for FDA-regulated ED drugs, such as Cialis.
