A Turkish research study found what seems to be an interesting link between blood type and the risk of developing erectile dysfunction. Men with type O blood appear to have the lowest risk of erectile dysfunction (ED).

Essential to erectile function is robust blood flow. But could a man’s blood type determine his chances of developing erection problems? Turkish researchers think so.

So the next time your girlfriend asks what your blood type is, she just might be gathering information to determine your long-term staying power in the bedroom.

In their study, published in the Italian-language “Archives of Italian Urology and Andrology” the researchers from Turkey’s Ordu University reveal that men with type O blood appear to have the lowest risk of erectile dysfunction of any blood type.

Study Covers 350 Men

The research study covered 350 men who had sought treatment at the researchers’ clinic between April 2012 and April 2015.

The men were divided into two groups — those with ED and those who had no symptoms of ED.

Researchers recorded the study participants’ age, blood type, the presence of other diseases, and erectile function, as determined by their score on the International Index of Erectile Function-5 questionnaire.

Researchers found no difference between the mean age of the 111 patients with ED and the 239 without ED.

Nor did they find any significant difference between the two groups in terms of alcohol use, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking.

Comparing Erectile Function Scores

Looking solely at patients in the ED group, researchers found that the mean IIEF-5 score among patients with type O blood was 19.8, indicative of mild erectile dysfunction. Mean scores in men with type B blood were 17.2, 16.5 in those with type A blood, and 13.3 in those with type AB blood.

IIEF-5 scores from 12 to 16 indicate mild to moderate ED, while those from 17 to 21 indicate mild ED.

Comparing patients of all other blood types to those with type O blood, researchers concluded that the risk of ED in men with type B blood was 3.5 times greater, 3.9 times greater in those with type A, and 4.7 times greater for type AB.

While intriguing, these results would need to be reproduced in other studies to confirm whether they are meaningful in the general population.
