2137733 – male patient and doctor talking
Talking about sexual problems typically isn’t high on any man’s list.

So, when symptoms of erectile dysfunction set it, talking with anyone about it – especially a spouse or a doctor – can be difficult.

Fortunately, most doctors can diagnose the cause of erectile dysfunction quickly and easily.

Typically, a doctor asks about sexual history and the symptoms that are bothering you, and the doctor might run a blood or urine test to rule out other physical problems. In many cases, a prescription for an erectile dysfunction medication like Cialis is given.

But when doctors can’t figure out a cause, they may need to do more extensive tests, like the NPT test, or nocturnal penile tumescence.

What is the NPT test?

The NPT test measures erections that men have at night. Most men have between 5-8 erections every night. They’re subtle, and most men don’t even notice them. If a man is struggling with ED symptoms but has erections at night, it’s likely that the cause of erectile dysfunction is a psychological cause like stress.

How are erections measured while a man sleeps? Two small rings are placed around the penis, one at the tip and one at the base. These rings measure the number of erections, how strong they are, and how long they last. It’s not the most comfortable situation, but this test can give doctors insight into your problem.

Will your doctor perform a NPT test?

The NPT test isn’t part of a routine ED visit. It’s only used when doctors can’t figure out the cause for erectile dysfunction.

The reliability of the test isn’t great either so it’s not the go-to test to diagnose ED.

Plus, if the NPT test was part of a routine ED visit, most doctors agree that even fewer men would seek treatment.
