A recent study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine revealed that one in four men seeking help for erectile dysfunction are under 40. While erectile dysfunction has long been associated with older men, researchers say that the affliction is becoming increasingly prevalent in younger men. Interestingly, the young men studied typically had lower body mass indexes, higher testosterone levels, and fewer incidences of previous medical conditions. These factors would normally suggest that these young men would be less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction, but that is not the case
A Rise In The Numbers
Researchers suspect that other factors are playing a role in the increase of under 40 erectile dysfunction cases. One possible explanation is the increasing dependency on cigarettes in young men. Cigarettes cause the blood vessels to tighten, which can make it difficult for the blood to reach the penis. Researchers also theorize that heavy drinking could affect men’s ability to achieve an erection. Heavy drinking can damage the central nervous system, which can ultimately affect a man’s ability to perform. Researchers say that these habits can lead to complications such as hormonal imbalance, which could lead to erection problems.
Researchers also suggest that younger men are experiencing increased levels of stress, which can make it difficult to perform. Neurological problems such as stress, depression, and anxiety can lead to difficulty achieving an erection, the stress of which could cause the dysfunction to get worse. For young men, not being able to perform even once could be seen as a serious problem. Researchers stress that the occasional missed erection is no cause for alarm, but if the problem becomes recurring, men should seek consultation with a doctor.
