Erectile dysfunction (ED) is likelier to be the cause of sexual “dry spells” rather than the result of them.

It stands to reason that if you have problems getting an erection that you may be having less sex than other men with regular sexual function, but can striking out cause ED?

A European scientist published a study posed this very question.

Research

The study, published in American Journal of Medicine, tracked 989 men in there 50s, 60s, and 70s for five years. It showed that men who reported having sexual intercourse less than once a week were twice as likely to develop ED. The less frequent the sex, the greater the risk for ED.

The study concluded that regular sexual activity would reduce the chance of getting ED. The scientist likened this to the body needing exercise to stay in shape.

Variables

One variable the study did not account for is masturbation and whether it helps or hinders sexual function.

If you’re having sex or masturbating, both forms of sexual activity shield blood vessels accountable for obtaining and maintain an erection.

Like most studies, there is not a general consensus on its findings. Irwin Goldstein, MD, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego says, “Having sex is good, masturbating is good, but the concept that men have to go out and have sex to preserve erectile function is bogus.”

Ira D. Sharlip, MD, clinical professor of urology at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine and a spokesman for the American Urological Association, says that infrequent sex is more likely to be a consequence of ED than a cause.

If you are currently experiencing a dry spell in sexual activity it’s important to remember that men typically obtain several erections throughout an evening of sleep that naturally protects against ED from occurring.
