The average price for Cialis ended the second half of 2019 only 3.2 percent lower than where it started in July. However, tadalafil’s average price was far more volatile, ending the second half 27.3 percent lower than it was in July.
Average prices for Cialis moved in a relatively narrow range during the second half of 2019, according to Secure Medical’s monthly review of prescription drug prices. However, greater volatility was observed in the average prices for tadalafil, Cialis’s generic equivalent, during the same six-month period.
Both Cialis and tadalafil are available in two basic formulations: higher strength tablets (10 to 20 mg) for use as needed or on-demand and lower-strength tablets (2.5 to 5 mg) that are designed for daily use. This article focuses on the higher-strength tablets of Cialis and tadalafil. A subsequent article will review prices for the daily formulation.
Generic Competition Relatively New
Cialis, which was first introduced on the U.S. market in 2003, has faced generic competition only since September 2018. However, as often happens with relatively pricey medications, the vast majority of consumers opt for the lower-priced generics when they become available. And in this respect, Cialis is no different.
For that reason, it’s probably not that surprising that the generic equivalent of Cialis has witnessed greater price volatility than the brand-name drug.
The average price of Cialis began in the second half of 2019 with a price of $78.06 in July. It fell about 2.9 percent to $75.83 in August and September. In October and November, it was 22 cents higher at $76.05. It hit its lowest level in December at $75.56, only 3.2 percent lower than where it started the six-month period.
Generic Prices More Volatile
By contrast, prices for tadalafil were considerably more active. The average price in July was $37.60. It dropped 26.9 percent in August to $27.47, climbed 4.4 percent to $28.67 in September and then dropped 30 cents to $28.37 in October. Tadalafil’s average price spiked 70 cents to $29.07 in November before falling nearly 6 percent to $27.33 in December. The prices are visually represented in the following graph.
The recommended starting dose for Cialis on-demand and tadalafil on-demand is 10 mg. However, because prices for 10 mg and 20 mg tablets are identical, most cost-conscious consumers buy the higher-strength tablets and then split them in half to yield two 10 mg doses. While both Cialis and tadalafil can be split safely, the same cannot be said for all medications. Check with your doctor before splitting any prescription drug.
What Sets Them Apart
Higher-strength Cialis and tadalafil have the distinction of being the longest-lasting erectile dysfunction drugs on the market with erection-friendly effects that continue for up to 36 hours.
