The infamous ‘blue pill’ has had some competition for several years, but now the maker’s of Cialis claim they will knock Viagra out of it’s top sale spot.

“This year we will overtake Viagra in terms of the number of prescriptions worldwide,” John Lechleiter told WirtschaftsWoche, a German magazine.

Viagra, taken for erectile dysfunction, has become a household name.  With an intense media blitz, the drug is well known but once competitors like Cialis and Levitra were introduced on the market several years ago they started to chip away at the hold Viagra had on the ED market.

The maker’s of Cialis, Eli Lilly, not only believe they’ll become number one on the ED charts, but they are also making an aggressive push to get new drugs on the market.

“As a company, we are well-positioned to meet that demand. We’re a top-five player in our major lines of business – diabetes, oncology, neuroscience and animal health – and these represent, along with autoimmune diseases, many of the largest and fastest-growing categories of medicines,” John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D., Lilly’s chairman, president and chief executive officer said.   “The need is great, the scientific knowledge base is expanding exponentially, and the research and development tools continue to improve. Lilly has moved quickly to transform and reenergize our innovation engine, deliver a new wave of potential new medicines, bridge our patent expiration period and ignite a new period of growth.”

Currently Eli Lilly has 70 potential medicines in clinical development.  These trials are testing drugs that may help with neuroscience, diabetes and oncology, as well as new areas such as autoimmunity.

“At Lilly, our future relies upon our ability to successfully discover and develop innovative medicines that address unmet patient needs,” John C. Lechleiter said.  “This will be a great year for the company.
