If you’ve begun to experience some of the disquieting symptoms of erectile dysfunction, this might be a good time to consider trying one of the popular impotence drugs now on the market. Although there are several to choose from, Cialis is clearly the most versatile because it’s available in two distinctly different formulations.

Of the two, Cialis for daily use has perhaps the higher profile, as the subject of a series of once-ubiquitous commercials designed to let men know that they “shouldn’t have to pause the moment to take a pill or find a bathroom.” While the rest of the ED drugs on the market, including Cialis’s other formulation, are designed to be taken as needed, shortly before sexual activity, Cialis for daily use promises it can keep you ready for action at any time if you take the pill daily.

How to Lower Cost per Dose

As with Cialis for daily use, your cost per dose of the as-needed drug depends on the size of your order. Increase your order to eight 20-milligram tablets, and your cost per 10-milligram dose drops to about $42.50. If, however, you find that you need all 20 milligrams to produce the desired results, your cost per dose will be $85.

As previously noted, Cialis for use as needed can work for up to 36 hours, far longer than the other ED drugs now on the market. For this reason, this formulation of Cialis is sometimes called the “weekend drug,” because its effects can last from late Friday night until early Sunday morning. It was this version of Cialis that was first to win approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA gave its thumbs-up to Cialis as needed in December 2003. The regulatory agency approved Eli Lilly & Company’s daily form of the drug in early 2008.

Cialis is a PDE5 Inhibitor

No matter which formulation of Cialis you decide to go with, both belong to a family of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. The active ingredient in both versions of Cialis is tadalafil, which is similar in chemical structure to the active ingredients in other ED medications, such as Levitra, Staxyn, Stendra, and Viagra. Despite this basic similarity, you might find that one of these drugs works better for you than the rest. Or you might find that they all work well but that you experience fewer side effects with one rather than the others.

As Cialis accurately points out in its TV and print commercials, “Your erectile dysfunction could be a question of blood flow.” In fact, the vast majority of erection problems can be traced to insufficient blood flow to the penis. Cialis and the other PDE5 inhibitors work by temporarily increasing that blood flow so that men with vascular problems have a window of four to 36 hours to enjoy sexual activity.

Cialis has a much longer half-life than other ED medications.

Erectile Process Explained

To better understand how Cialis and the others work, it’s helpful to know a little bit about the basics of erectile function, which originates in the brain. When the brain detects feelings or thoughts of sexual desire or receives signals triggered by the physical stimulation of the genitals, it sends a flood of nitric oxide coursing through the arteries en route to the penis.

The nitric oxide triggers secondary chemical reactions, one producing a substance known as cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP. Next, the cGMP relaxes the smooth muscles lining the arteries that supply the penis, allowing them to expand and increase blood flow to the organ. As the spongy erectile tissue of the penis becomes engorged with blood, an erection occurs.

PDE5 Enzyme Can Spoil Party

Also present in the body is an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase-5, or PDE5. One of its main functions is to break down cGMP. In men with compromised blood flow, the PDE5 enzyme can sabotage the erectile process by wiping out cGMP prematurely. Cialis and the other ED drugs manage to hold PDE5 at bay for four to 36 hours, allowing impotent men to get and keep erections long enough for sexual activity.

The most common side effects of Cialis are generally mild and may disappear altogether upon continued use. These adverse effects include headache, back and muscle pain, facial flushing, indigestion, and runny or stuffy nose. Less common and more serious side effects are an erection that lasts for four or more hours or a total or partial loss of hearing or vision. Should such side effects occur, it’s essential to seek medical attention immediately.

It’s Not for Everyone

Men whose doctors have told them that sexual activity might be hazardous to their health should not take Cialis, nor should it be used by men who are also taking nitrate-based drugs for angina. Nitrates are also present in the recreational drugs known as poppers. Both Cialis and the nitrates work by lowering blood pressure. Using them together could cause such a precipitous drop in blood pressure as to be life-threatening.

Both formulations of Cialis are available in the United States only under their brand-name labels at this time. However, brand-name Cialis could face generic competition as early as September 2018 under an agreement reached in July 2017 between Lilly and a handful of generic drugmakers.

To read more about Cialis and the other ED medications available through eDrugstore.com, click here to access the website’s Erection Problems page. You’ll need a prescription to buy Cialis — or any of the other prescription ED drugs. You can get one from your doctor, which can then be faxed or scanned and emailed to eDrugstore along with your order. If, however, you’re reluctant to discuss such personal matters with your doctor, eDrugstore can set up an online consultation with one of its team of licensed U.S. physicians who can authorize a prescription if appropriate.
