Impotence
Age is not always a factor when it comes to erectile dysfunction.

By now, you’ve probably heard the old adage that men are bound to become impotent as they get older. In fact, many people believe that men start to “lose their stride” after their 20s, and by the time 40 hits, it’s a given that most men will begin experiencing the effects of impotence. The truth, however, seems to be that not all men experience erectile dysfunction, and in fact, the numbers most people accept may be well off.

Erectile dysfunction can have many causes, and most can be treated, leaving men (and women) confused as to the next steps. Currently, media types try to push erectile dysfunction as a foregone conclusion for older men, leaving many couples to turn to dangerous and untested methods to get things simmering again. This might be why you see so many “solutions” to male impotence in gas stations and supermarkets these days. It’s often tough to tell where these “solutions” come from, and it may be even more difficult to tell whether they come with side effects until someone tries them out. Although they may be cheap, there’s a reason for the price and the lack of information, and some of these “drugs” may actually cause much more harm than good, even after a single use.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

To dispel the myth that all men eventually develop erectile dysfunction, it’s first important to understand the causes of this condition. Erectile dysfunction can be brought on by a variety of factors, both physical and mental, so it’s impossible to say that all men will develop this concern in life. Everyone is different and everything from lifestyle choices to genetics may be the reason for developing or not developing erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction may also be the result of a declining interest in sexual activity on the whole. Men who have aged often find themselves becoming bored with sex or sexual activity, at least physiologically. This isn’t to state that they don’t recognize attractive women or that they lose their sense of attraction, but it is to state that they may have come to a point in which sexual infatuation no longer dominates their thinking.

Smoking, Drinking, and Diet

Although it may seem like smoking, drinking alcohol, and diet may seem far off from erectile dysfunction, the truth is that all of these things often play a very large role in the development of erectile dysfunction. Smoking can lead to high blood pressure, altering the body’s ability to send blood to the penis in order to achieve an erection. Likewise, consuming too much alcohol can lead to the same issue, but in this case, men who drink too much may have a hard time achieving an erection due to the distraction that alcohol causes in large doses.

When it comes to diet, men who are overweight or who develop diabetes may have a more difficult time achieving an erection as the result of physiological changes in body chemistry. Overweight men typically experience high blood pressure and a thickening of the arteries. All of this can make blood flow difficult, and of course, erections occur because of proper blood flow to the penis. When someone is severely overweight, blood flow may be slowed or stunted, leading to a lessened erection.

Internal Conflicts

Aside from controllable lifestyle choices, like eating, drinking, and smoking, internal conflicts can also lead to erectile dysfunction. Everything from anxiety to depression may cause a man to develop fears about sexual performance, and this then leads to erectile dysfunction. In a nutshell, when a man feels stressed out, he is going to have a harder time concentrating on achieving and maintain an erection. Once this happens in the heat of the moment, he may begin to feel even more pressured, leading to even more stress. In the end, he may find himself heading down a path that has no happy ending.

In order for men to get in the mood, they generally need visual stimulation, but when they are experiencing things like performance anxiety, even that may not be enough. Visual stimulation is typically coupled with physical stimulation for men, leaving many to require a combination in order to become turned on. When one of these components is lacking, a man may have a difficult time achieving or maintaining and erection.

Medications and Erectile Dysfunction

Although age is considered to be an automatic qualification for erectile dysfunction, many older people are taking more medications in order to improve their quality of life. This may then translate into erectile dysfunction as many medications these days can have a great effect on sexual health. Medications like antidepressants are known to have adverse effects on sexual health, but so are drugs like blood pressure medications and antipsychotics. If you feel that any medications you’re taking are getting in the way of enjoying an active sex life, regardless of age, please speak to your primary care physician.

Also, it’s important to speak to your physician prior to being prescribed any type of erectile dysfunction medication because some of these drugs can be harmful under certain conditions. As mentioned, high blood pressure is a common cause of erectile dysfunction, and many erectile dysfunction drugs can exacerbate an underlying condition like high blood pressure. In the end, you don’t want to be uninformed, so discuss any health topics with your doctor prior to taking any type of prescription medication. It would be a good idea to come to your initial and follow-up visits with a list of questions or concerns in hand so that you can leave assured that you will be solving a problem and not creating one.

So What Does Age Have to Do With It?

Although age isn’t necessarily tied to erectile dysfunction, the idea is that, as time goes on, there are many more chances for men to develop or experience things that lead to the condition. For example, older men are more likely to have experienced an injury to a lower extremity compared to younger men. So, in this case, age does not correlate because, given an infinite amount of time, everyone will experience such an injury.

In addition, given enough time, all men will develop things like prostate cancer, a disease that has a very large effect on a man’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection and perform sexually. So, in this way, age does certainly play into the scenario, the extent to which it does is limited only by the biology of the modern human male.

With this stated, only about 30% of men over the age of 70. Although television and Internet advertisements may make it seem as though every senior male is going to have trouble in the bedroom or lose sexual interest altogether, the numbers simply don’t support these claims.
