A Fractured Penis? Why it Took 12 Hours to Recognize
In what my be considered the worst case of attention deficit disorder of all time, it took 12 hours for a British man to notice his penis was “broken.”

How it happened

The 47-year-old man was having sex when he felt a “snapping” sensation.

Somehow, he managed to maintain his erection (no word if he was taken an erectile dysfunction drug, such a Cialis) and kept having sex.

About 12 hours later, he noticed that he had bloody urine and his penis and scrotum were bruised.

At the hospital

At the University College of London Hospital, doctors confirmed that the man’s penis was fractured and sent him to the urology department. (You can’t really “break” your penis because it doesn’t have a bone, but you can fracture it by injuring your urethra.) He underwent surgery and was back to normal two weeks later.

What exactly snapped?

In the hospital’s report, the doctors explained that this type of injury is very rare, but they know enough to understand how it happens. As the report said: “During an erection, the fascia of the erectile bodies (tunica albuginea) is stretched thinly and with a sudden torque during vigorous sexual intercourse, this fascia can rupture.”

In layperson’s terms, when a man gets an erection, the two tubes (called the corpora cavernosa) in his penis fill with blood. If the erection experiences a sudden burst of force, the tubes can tear.

Typically, the tear would cause a lot of pain and the man would immediately lose his erection. In this case, the man didn’t feel pain when the injury occurred, and he maintained his erection. Again, it makes you wonder if he had taken an erectile dysfunction drug, such Cialis. Whatever the reason he was able to keep going, he’s lucky he didn’t hurt himself even more.
