Plants, insect stingers, and psychoanalysis have all been used to cure erectile dysfunction (ED). But for most men, ED has to do with inadequate circulation – a problem drugs like Viagra address directly.

Up until the era of modern pharmaceutical treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), the whole subject was shrouded in myth.

For almost the entire 20th century, ED wasn’t talked about, or was considered to be “all in the mind,” and was called “impotence,” an insulting diagnosis if ever there were one.

Erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra have been available for over 15 years now, and the physical phenomena behind ED have been significantly researched during that time. But while millions of men the world over take Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Stendra, and Staxyn, there are still plenty of weird folk remedies in use for treatment of ED. Here are 8 weird ways people have tried to treat erectile dysfunction

1. Wasp Stingers

Before the mechanism behind relaxation of the smooth muscle lining blood vessels was understood properly, many people correctly understood that getting blood to flow into the genitals was the key to producing an erection. The problem was, they relied on myth to help them develop ways to do this. One remedy from the Kama Sutra involved catching wasps, removing the stingers and grinding them up into a poultice to be applied directly to the penis.

2. Chinese Herbs

As long ago as 2500 BCE, Chinese medical textbooks extolled the use of herbs to treat erectile dysfunction. In fact, herbs are still used today in efforts to treat ED, or in attempts to produce a “natural” Viagra. In ancient China, it was believed that a man’s yin and yang became progressively more unbalanced with advancing age, until a lack of yin would eventually deplete all his sexual energy. One ancient medical text listed 22 herbal ingredients for addressing ED, said to be used by the emperor to (supposedly) successfully seduce 1,200 women.

3. Cape Fur Seal Genitalia

This is still around today, and it’s a shame. Seal penises are believed by some traditional Asian practitioners to forestall aging, strengthen the body, and nourish the internal organs, and the genitalia of Cape fur seals is said to have properties that enhance sexual performance. While this product is high in Omega 3 fatty acids (which are supposed to be good for circulation), poaching of these animals is illegal and destructive, with up to 8000 seal pups and 6000 adult male seals killed annually. Today, we know better, but the practice sadly continues.

4. Urethral Strictures

During the Victorian era, there was a prevalent theory that excessive masturbation would damage the responsive tissues of the penis and eventually lead to erectile dysfunction. One nightmarish treatment involved implanting curved rods through the hole at the tip of the penis. Once these rods were inserted, a bulb at the end would be squeezed, pushing nitric acid into the bladder. What did a man get in return for enduring this barbaric treatment? Pain mostly, because it didn’t help with ED.

5. Lotus Flowers

Medications like Viagra work far better than lotus flowers.

In ancient Egypt, erectile dysfunction was believed to result from evil spirits, and the ancient Egyptians had many ways to ward off such an unfortunate curse. One of the treatments involved white and blue lotus flowers, and it turns out there may be some truth in this remedy. Lotus flowers were used as aphrodisiacs, and as a way to treat ED. Modern scientists have analyzed the chemicals in lotus flowers and found that they contain apomorphine, which mimics the action of dopamine in the brain and is actually used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Though apomorphine has been tried as a treatment for ED, on the theory that it might enhance sexual response, scientific studies have been disappointing so far.

6. Spanish Fly

Spanish fly is actually a chemical called cantharidin, and it’s harvested from a southern European green beetle. It has long been thought of as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and lack of female sexual response. What it does is, when swallowed, is produce irritation in the urinary tract, and this can sometimes stimulate erections. It also has side effects of agitation and nervousness, which probably aren’t ideal in a sexual setting. Spanish fly is also dangerous, and can be deadly. In fact, it was used by the Medici family in the 14th century to dispatch enemies by poisoning.

7. Drinking Urine

While not as painful as urethral rods or as poisonous as Spanish fly, drinking urine has to be one of the more unpleasant cures for erectile dysfunction. It has been touted by Taoist physicians in China as well as Indian Ayurvedic doctors. Drinking large quantities of one’s own urine was believed to restore any manly drive that would otherwise go down the drain after urination. Urine indeed contains small amounts of testosterone, but certainly not enough to accomplish the task of overcoming ED.

8. A Dose of Freud

In the Freudian clinical practice, “psychical impotence” figured heavily. In Dr. Freud’s opinion, erectile dysfunction was the product of inhibition caused by unresolved neurotic fixation that would ultimately quash the libido. Freud believed that the unresolved “Madonna-whore” complex induced sexual dysfunction, and that the resolution of this psychological issue was the key to treating ED. However, Freud didn’t think ED was all that unusual, believing it to be a byproduct of “civilized people.” While sexual dysfunction and ED can have psychological components, today’s psychiatric professionals have much better ways of helping me cope.

No one denies that lifestyle and psychological elements affect erectile functioning, but with the advent of today’s remarkably effective ED medications, it has become clear that in most cases, erectile dysfunction is a matter of the hydraulics of the sex organs being unable to function optimally. Viagra and similar drugs address this exact problem, allowing the smooth muscle cells lining the blood vessels of the penis to relax, allowing better blood flow and usually producing an erection in the presence of sexual stimulation.

If you believe you have erectile dysfunction, you can be reassured by the fact that the condition is not only less taboo than it once was, but that it’s much less shrouded in mystery. Doctors today have effective, non-traumatic methods of helping patients with ED, so you don’t have to resort to mythical “cures” from the past.
