Erectile dysfunction
Make a special dinner featuring his favorite dish, and add a little candlelight and fine wine to set the mood for romance.

In less than two decades, Viagra has revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The little blue pill has allowed millions of impotent men to temporarily regain erectile function and thus resume near-normal sex lives.

But one thing the pill cannot do is spontaneously create an erection. Men still need to do that the old-fashioned way.

Viagra and the other oral ED medications that have followed it to market increase blood flow to the penis, making an erection possible.

But the men who take the drug — and their partners — need to find their own formulas to trigger arousal so that the medication can do its job.

What follows is a list of suggestions for activities or behaviors that are tried and true turn-ons for men. They come from a wide array of sources, including the men on whom these turn-ons have been effective and the women who love them.

1. Lay Your Head on His Chest

Writing for WomensHealthMag.com, dating and relationship blogger James Michael Sama offers this tip for women who are looking for ways to get their man in the mood for romance. He says that at the end of a long day, having a woman lay her head on her partner’s chest creates a warm feeling that is almost certain to lead eventually to romance. Sama elaborates: “As men, we enjoy feeling as though we are being protective, and this signifies that she feels safe with us.”

2. Moments of Quiet Intimacy

For couples who’ve been together for some time, sexy lingerie, sex toys, and racy talk may no longer be that effective as preludes to romance. WebMD.com interviewed a 40-year-old University of Virginia professor and his wife of 10 years to learn what works for them. The professor confides that after a decade with his wife, his turn-ons are “a lot more pedestrian these days.” He goes on to say that simple intimacies, such as holding hands and cuddling, are far more likely to get him into the sack than the much bolder turn-ons of yesteryear.

3. Share His Interests

In an article posted at Cosmopolitan.com, writer Kelly Thore suggests that women try to join in on activities that their men enjoy. If a woman finds her man playing video games on his Xbox or PlayStation, she should challenge him to a two-player face-off. “Even if you’re not so into gaming,” she writes, “he’ll dig that you’re making an effort to try something he likes.” If you have absolutely no interest in what your male partner is doing, it will probably show, in which case it’s probably best to try another approach to romance.

4. Set the Stage for Romance

Without being too heavy-handed about it, a woman can kindle the romantic flame in her male partner by arranging a special dinner featuring a dish he truly loves. This suggestion comes from writer Pam Spurr in an article posted at the U.K. website of The Mirror. Add candlelight and background music that you know he likes to make it truly a special occasion. Plan it in advance and pique his interest with tweets or texts as the special night approaches.

5. Let Him Know He’s Appreciated

Despite the tough-guy exterior they may show to the outside world, most men like to be reassured that the effort they are putting into their relationships is appreciated. Even though your actions may very well show how thankful you are for him and all that he does, Sama says it never hurts to put it into words. Knowing that his contribution to the relationship is appreciated can help set the mood for romance.

6. Surprise Him with a Little Special Attention

In her Cosmopolitan article, Thore points out that “guys like being pampered as much as you do.” She suggests that their partners surprise them with a back rub or foot massage to ease their tension and anxiety after a stress-filled day at work.

7. Don’t Let Him Forget the Good Times

For many men, cuddling, hand-holding, and other simple intimacies can be a major turn-on.
Almost every relationship has its ups and downs, but it’s important for both partners to remind each other of the good times, particularly during moments when things are a bit rocky.

In her article for the Mirror, Spurr points out that “repeated studies show that couples who take time out to look through old photos feel warmer toward each other.”

8. Ask Him What He Wants

If all else fails, it’s not a bad idea to ask your man what turns him on. If you truly care for him, and the turn-on is neither illegal nor life-threatening, indulge him for a bit and see where it leads.
