High-stress jobs, including police work, increase one’s exposure to anxiety and depression, which in turn can lead to difficulty in getting and keeping an erection.

To some degree or another, men have probably suffered from erection problems since the beginning of time. Until relatively recently, it was a subject that most men weren’t willing to discuss openly and frankly.

In fact, some males find it difficult to broach the topic even with doctors, which is usually an important first step in getting help with a problem that is finally much more treatable than was the case for millennia.

Knowledge about Impotence Grows

However, from the discussions sparked by the introduction of PDE5 inhibitors, such as Viagra and Cialis, the American public has been able to glean a handful of basic facts about erection problems and their most common causes.

For years medical professionals and laymen alike attributed the inability to get and keep an erection strong enough for intercourse to deeply ingrained psychological problems. Now, thankfully, it is widely recognized that impotence is most often caused by inadequate blood flow to the penis, which can be traced to the damage done by atherosclerosis or other medical conditions that compromise healthy circulation.

There is still much that the public doesn’t know about erection problems. Here are some of the behaviors, conditions, and even jobs that may make men more likely to experience symptoms of impotence.

1. Stressful Jobs

In an article posted at Prevention.com, writer Stephanie Castillo reports that a survey by ErectileDoctor.com showed that men in jobs that expose them to significant levels of anxiety and depression are far more likely to develop erection problems. If they allow that anxiety and depression to infect their personal lives, those feelings alone might well make it difficult or even impossible to get it up. But men in stressful job situations, such as firefighters, policemen, and healthcare workers, tend to let off steam by indulging heavily in alcohol consumption, smoking, or taking antidepressants, all of which are behaviors that in excess can also cause impotence.

Among the psychological causes of erection problems, anxiety and depression rank right up there at the top, according to Justin Sitron, Ph.D., a professor at Widener University’s Center for Human Sexuality Studies.  He points out that the nervous system plays a key role in erectile function, noting that if the system is distracted or depressed, erection simply isn’t going to happen.

2Gum Disease

Good dental hygience, including regular flossing, can help prevent gum disease, which can sharply increase your risk of impotence.

Ever suspect that your diligent daily regimen of dental hygiene might help prevent problems in your love life? Well, it appears the evidence is fairly strong, according to an article in the March 2013 issue of ¨The Journal of Sexual Medicine.¨ A team of Turkish researchers reported on a study that showed a close association between chronic periodontitis — advanced gum disease — and erection problems, and it can strike young men particularly hard.

Researchers assembled a study group of 162 male patients between the ages of 30 and 40. Eighty of the study subjects had been diagnosed with erection problems, and 82 had no history of impotence. They found that 53 percent of the ED patients had chronic periodontitis, while the incidence of severe gum disease was only 23 percent among those who had no symptoms of impotence.

3. Vitamin D Deficiency

Because the blood vessels supplying the penis are much smaller than those that supply the heart, it has long been recognized that symptoms of erectile dysfunction can be an early warning that cardiovascular disease, or CVD, may lie ahead. Erection problems are particularly useful in identifying patients who have not yet shown any symptoms of heart disease but may be headed for trouble as their atherosclerosis advances.

Because vitamin D deficiency is one of several factors associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, two American researchers conducted a study to determine what — if any — link might between vitamin D deficiency and impotence. The resulting study, published in the April 1, 2012 issue of ¨DermatoEndocrinology,¨ suggested that optimizing serum vitamin D levels through supplementation or increased exposure to sunlight could help keep erection problems, as well as CVD, at bay.

4. Too Much Porn

In his Therapy Matters blog, which is posted at regular intervals on the website PsychologyToday.com, clinical psychologist Tyger Latham reports on an increased incidence of erection problems among men who spend much of their spare time watching pornography online.

A heavy diet of online pornography may also contribute to other manifestations of sexual dysfunction, including premature ejaculation and delayed ejaculation. While his initial hunch led him to believe that the link between heavy porn-watching and ED was primarily psychological, as in creating unrealistic expectations from a real-life partner, Dr. Latham eventually determined that the problem was more complex than that. He observed that porn addicts sometimes develop a lack of sensitivity to pleasure-seeking neurotransmitters such as dopamine.

5. Excessive Biking

Biking more than three hours a week could increase your risk of erection problems.
Biking more than three hours a week could increase your risk of erection problems.

There is no question that bicycling is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, but it can also interfere with your ability to get and keep an erection strong enough for intercourse, according to WebMD. However, it seems unlikely that an occasional bike ride would pose a problem.

Men who regularly ride their bikes for extended periods of time put an extraordinary amount of weight on their perineums — the area between the scrotum and the anus. Through this very area of the body pass the blood vessels and nerves that supply and control the male reproductive organ. Over time, this pressure can cause damage to these blood vessels and nerves that ultimately might cause erection problems.

According to Irwin Goldstein, M.D., director of San Diego Sexual Medicine, ¨the earliest warning sign is numbness or tingling.¨ WebMD reports that risk seems to be highest among men who ride their bikes more than three hours a week, according to data from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study.

6. Snoring and Sleep Apnea

If your wife or significant other has lately been waking you from a sound sleep to complain about your thunderous snoring, it could be a sign that you’re suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA. Now, snoring alone doesn’t mean you’ve got OSA, but because OSA can lead to host of other health problems, it might be worth your while to get it checked out.

The incidence of erection problems among men with OSA is far higher than it is in the general population. And men with sleep apnea also have a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular problems.
