Millions of people in the U.S. suffer with Type 2 diabetes. While it was once considered an adult disease, recently a growing number of children have been diagnosed with the condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children and adolescents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are generally between 10 and 19 years old, obese, and have a strong family history for type 2 diabetes.
The condition begins when the body develops a resistance to insulin, which results in irregular blood sugar. Over time the condition can lead to heart disease, blindness, and nerve and kidney damage. There are prescription drugs that can help manage diabetes and now the Food and Drug Administration has approved another one.
Tradjenta was given the green light by the government organization to be marketed as a treatment for those with Type 2 diabetes.
“This approval provides another treatment option for the millions of Americans with Type 2 diabetes,” said Mary Parks, M.D., director of the Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “It is effective when used alone or when added to existing treatment regimens.”
According to a recent news release, Tradjenta increases the level of hormones that stimulate the release of insulin which results in better blood glucose control. The new medication was tested by the FDA in eight studies, with the help of about 3,800 patients. The studies showed improvement in blood glucose control compared with placebo.
Type 2 Diabetes and Weight
There is a connection between diabetes and weight. While diabetes can be cured, it can be managed or even prevented if certain weight loss measures are taken. Here are a few tips from the Mayo Clinic:
*Start with realistic goals. When overweight people achieve even modest weight loss they reduce risk factors in the heart.
*A regular exercise program is essential for maintaining weight loss.
*For patients who cannot lose weight with diet alone, weight-loss medications such as Alli or Xenical may be considered.
