Study Looks at Efficacy and Satisfaction of Men Using Cialis

A study published in the journal European Urology looked at the results of men taking Cialis, an FDA-approved drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. The objective was to determine if Cialis worked, and if men were happy with the results.

Details of the Study

Of the 409 who participated in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the mean age was 52 years. The men were given either a placebo or 20 mg of Cialis, which they took on demand over 12 weeks.

In terms of erectile dysfunction severity, the Cialis patients were classified as:

48% mild

29% moderate

23% severe

Side effects included:

  • headache: 1.9% of placebo group vs. 7.2% of Cialis group
  • flushing: 0% of placebo group, 4.6% of Cialis group
  • back pain: one Cialis user discontinued treatment due to back pain

The Results

Of the patients who took the placebo, only 16% were able to achieve a normal erection. Of the men who took Cialis, 64% were able to achieve a normal erection.

Of the 185 men who filled out a questionnaire regarding their satisfaction with the treatment (48 received the placebo, 137 received Cialis), the median score was 41 for the placebo-treated patients and 84 for those who took Cialis.

Based on these results, the researchers concluded that 20 mg of Cialis significantly improves erectile function in men with mild to severe erectile dysfunction.

Considerations

Men who are considering taking Cialis to treat erectile dysfunction will need to get a prescription from their doctor. Due to embarrassment, some men choose to see a doctor other than their own primary physician. But because there are side effects and interactions with other medications, it’s vital that any health concerns (such as high blood pressure or diabetes) or the use prescription or over-the-counter drugs are disclosed, especially if you are seeing a doctor that doesn’t have all your medical records on file.
