Bizarre Case Grabs Headlines
William Marotta, a husband and father, responded to a Craigslist ad put out by a lesbian couple in March of 2009. He gave his sperm to the couple free of charge, which was used to inseminate Jennifer Schreiner. Schreiner and her wife, Angela Bauer, planned to raise the child without any help from Marotta. Legal documents were signed and Marotta thought the deal was done.
Then, Schreiner lost her job and filed for state assistance. When that happened, the state filed a support claim against Marotta, which he is fighting in court.
It’s unclear how the state even knew Marotta was the father, he isn’t listed on the child’s birth certificate, but the state was still able to track him down.
Meanwhile, Bauer feels the whole ordeal has gotten out of hand.
“This was a wonderful opportunity with a guy with an admirable, giving character who wanted nothing more than to help us have a child,” Bauer said. “I feel like the state of Kansas has made a mess out of the situation.”
She went on to say, “We are going to support him in whatever action he wants to go forward with.”
Marotta Thinks the Claim is Politically Motivated
Marotta says he’s unsure why he is being targeted and wonders if it has anything to do with the fact that he helped a gay couple.

“I have a hunch part of the reason this is going this way is because of people’s feelings toward same-sex couples,” Marotta said in an exclusive interview with FoxNews.com. “I can’t help but feel this is somewhat of a political issue.”
Marotta went on to say, “The only good thing I can see about this is it’s going to open a lot of eyes,” Marotta told FoxNews.com. “But I’m like, ‘Why me?’”
