Soy may help women deal with menopause

When a women hits menopause the symptoms brought on by this change can alter her quality of life.  The permanent end of menstruation brings about physical and emotional changes that can impact a woman’s sleeping habits, decrease energy and trigger feelings of sadness or loss. 

Now doctors are realizing the benefits soy can have during this time.

Doctors weigh in
“Although a significant amount of scientific research about soy and soy isoflavones exists, the adoption of soy isoflavones into the care of women in menopause has to date been recommended mainly by physicians and health care practitioners involved in integrative medicine. We believed that facilitating a robust review of the current scientific evidence about the benefits and risks of soy could yield a document useful to physicians to help them make decisions about soy use with their patients, particularly those in menopause,” said Belinda H. Jenks, Ph.D., director of Scientific Affairs & Nutrition Education at Pharmavite LLC. Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Pharmavite LLC and the Allmen Foundation supported the development of the symposium and report via an unrestricted educational grant.

The authors’ menopause treatment recommendations were based on a review of 14 studies that included data on soy.  All women in the study experienced natural, not induced, menopause and the women’s average age, their prevalence of hot flashes and the magnitude of symptoms were evaluated.  Those taking soy said their symptoms lessened.

New supplement in the works
The makers of Nature Made vitamins and minerals are working on a soy supplement that will bind to estrogen receptors and may ease some of the symptoms created as women lose estrogen during menopause.  Flaxseed has also been shown to ease hot flashes.

Future of soy for menopausal women
Reserachers believe more studies should be conducted to see what other benefits soy can have for women.  It’s believed soy may also help with heart troubles and may even have some promise in preventing certain types of cancer associated with female organs.
