Runners, listen up. If you’re up early in the morning pounding the pavement, you should know that some doctors believe that running barefoot is better for you. This new phenomenon is beginning to pick up steam across the U.S. There are “barefoot running clubs” that promote the sport as a better way to run. While some think running barefoot would cause injuries, like stepping on something sharp, some research indicates it’s better for feet than sneakers.
The benefit of naked feet
“People who don’t wear shoes when they run have an astonishingly different strike,” Lieberman says in a news release. “By landing on the middle or front of the foot, barefoot runners have almost no impact collision, much less than most shod runners generate when they heel-strike.”
“Most people today think barefoot running is dangerous and hurts, but actually you can run barefoot on the world’s hardest surfaces without the slightest discomfort and pain.”
Barefoot runner says it feels great
Joe Feelder unlaced his tennis shoes about a year ago, “I saw a guy running barefoot in the park and we started talking and he really convinced me to try it out,” he said. Running and walking about 30 minutes everyday is his typical exercise routine. “It took a few weeks to build up the tougheness of my feet, but it really does feel better.” Feelder says he has fewer aches and pains in his muscles and joints.
“I know it sounds a little crazy,” he said. “I sounds backwards, but it really is something runners should try out.”
Lose the shoes
“Modern people have grown up wearing shoes, so running barefoot is something to be eased into, Lieberman says. Modern running shoes are designed to make heel-striking easy and comfortable. He suggests runners who want to shed their shoes do so slowly, to build strength in the calf and foot muscles.”
