A baby girl born today near Los Angeles took the meaning of “roadside assistance” to a whole new level. She made her grand entrance into the world in the dark of night amid the whizzing traffic of the 605 freeway in Los Alamitos.
The father was rushing his wife to the hospital in the family’s black SUV when the baby began to emerge. The man immediately pulled off the highway and called 911. Everything happened so fast, the 911 operators barely had enough time to tell the man what to do. But he was able to successfully deliver the baby within two minutes of placing his emergency call.
Dispatchers reported that the man placed his call at 1:19 a.m. and by 1:21 a.m. the baby was heard to be crying over the phone. Paramedics arrived seven minutes later to cut the umbilical cord and to ensure the baby and her mother were OK. The family was transported to the Los Alimitos Medical Center, located about 25 miles south of Los Angeles.
Not long after the family’s arrival, the hospital reported that both the baby and the mother were in good health. One source said that the roadside event made the mother and father the proud parents of their second child.
The name of the family has not been released, but that information will likely find its way into the media eventually. Certainly, the Los Angeles-area media will be following up on this story.
The event near Los Angeles brings to mind a similar event near the end of last year, when a former participant on MTV’s “Real World” program was forced to become a mother on the side of the 202 freeway in Phoenix, Ariz.
Candace Smith’s roadside story is very similar to the one above. Her husband, Matt Smith, called 911 for assistance, yet he delivered his baby within two minutes of his call. As it turned out, the Smiths were also proud parents of a healthy baby daughter. Their life-changing event took place in late October.
Not many babies receive news coverage when they enter the world, but these two new babies already have an awesome video collection to enjoy for the ages.
