A recent study conducted at Austin Hospital in Melbourne, Australia has found that gastric band surgery can worsen erection problems in men, but can also help women who suffer from urinary incontinence.
One hundred patients were examined after getting gastric band surgery, which involves a band being placed around the stomach to limit the amount a person can eat. Researchers found that men already suffering from erection problems were likely to see these problems worsen after surgery. The researchers credit this problem to possible physiological issues from the surgery, or from the hormone changes that occur.
Meanwhile, it was found that women suffering from urinary incontinence before the surgery saw improvements in this area afterwards. Conversely, men afflicted with this same problem did not see improvements after the operation.
Researchers stress that these findings come from a limited time frame, with patients being studied soon after the surgery.
