Lethal Brazilian Wandering Spider Venom May Hold a Cure for Erectile Dysfunction

Researchers at the Ezequiel Dias Foundation in Brazil have found a way to isolate the chemical in the lethal venom of the Brazilian wandering spider that’s known to cause long, painful erections and used it to develop erections in mice. It could lead to treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED).

Preliminary Findings

The hope is that a small amount of the chemical in the venom can be used to create treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED) in humans, without any of the unsafe side effects.

Scientists are going to take their time formulating an ED cure, seeing as at least 14 people have died from the bite of the Brazilian wandering spider. In addition, countless people who have been bitten but survived experienced symptoms such as convulsions, blurred vision, abdominal cramps and hypothermia.

In the Meantime …

Until the ED cure is fully tested and approved by the FDA in the United States, men are better off using more traditional ED drugs, such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

The drugs are all FDA-approved to treat ED and have fewer—and certainly less dramatic—side effects than a bite from a venomous tropical spider.

The most common side effects for the top three ED drugs—Viagra, Cialis and Levitra—are headache, heartburn or upset stomach, changes in vision, hearing loss, flushing and back pain.

Determining Which ED Drug Is Right for You

Don’t feel you need to—or should—decide which ED drug is right for you all by yourself. Since you need a prescription to get Viagra, Cialis or Levitra anyway, use the opportunity to talk to your doctor about other medications you’re taking, your health risk factors and how you’d like to use the ED drugs. For example, Viagra lasts about four hours and takes about half an hour to become effective, while Cialis can last up to 36 hours.
