Ask world-renowned sexual medicine author Dr. Sudhakar Krishnamurti why India is the impotence capital of the world and he’ll offer some surprising statistics: More than half of males over 40 in India suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) in some form.

Factors Causing ED

Dr. Krishnamurti cites heart disease, hypertension and excessive smoking and drinking as the contributing causes, pointing out that the steep rise in heart ailments can be correlated with the increase in ED.

“And it isn’t an all-or-nothing scenario,” explains Krishnamurti. “You can have decreasing levels of rigidity, and even if a person isn’t completely impotent, they might not be able to perform.”

Male Menopause

Women aren’t the only ones who go through sexual changes later in life. Dr. Krishnamurti says that at least once a day a male patient comes to him with complaints of reduced vitality, mood swings, listlessness, reduced interest in sex and a decreased capability to get or maintain an erection.

According to Dr. Krishnamurti, it can take men awhile to accept that they’re experiencing these types of changes, and it’s often the wives that schedule the appointment for their husband.

The New Face of Impotence in India

Back in 1989, Dr. Krishnamurti had just opened his clinic, which had a glass front door. He would watch men linger and then quickly slip into the office when they thought no one was looking. Impotence was a relatively taboo subject and most men didn’t really talk about it.

By the mid-1990s, Indian men were a bit more open about their ED problems, but it was mostly single men coming in to see Dr. Krisnamurti.

Fast forward to today. Dr. Krisnamurti says he sees a vast range of patients: couples, villagers who speak no English, medical tourists and executives who fly in on private jets.

India may be the impotence capital of the world in terms of numbers and prevalence, but at least men are finally reaching out for help.
