What You Should Know Before Taking an ED Medication

What You Should Know Before Taking an ED Medication

If you’re experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED), don’t assume that you can (or should) just hop online and buy the first pill being advertised.

There’s a lot to know before you try to diagnose and “fix” everything yourself.

You may not need ED medication.

There are lots of reasons that men experience impotency, and not all of them require ED medication.

If you are depressed, anxious or experiencing marital problems, you may be referred to counseling or a psychiatrist who can prescribe an antidepressant or something for anxiety.

ED can also be caused by some controllable factors, such as obesity, stress, smokin and sleep quality and quantity.

A doctor may recommend that you first try losing weight, meditating, reducing your stress, changing your eating habits, or even going through a sleep study to see if a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine can help with your sleep apnea.

Not all ED drugs are created equal.

As with any industry, there are swindlers willing to take your money in exchange for something worthless—or worse: dangerous.

Legitimate ED drugs, such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, will require a doctor’s prescription. Anyplace that says otherwise isn’t telling the truth.

There are also ads for “herbal ED treatments,” which are ineffective, can have interactions with your current medications, and aren’t always labeled truthfully.

Without true FDA approval and regulation, you have no idea what you’re taking—even if the so-called ingredients are listed.

In addition, certain kinds of herbal supplements can affect potassium levels, blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Some men shouldn’t take ED drugs.

Men who have had a stroke, heart problems or high blood pressure need to be under a doctor’s supervision before taking ED medications, as they can be dangerous. The same is true if you take blood thinners or nitrates.
