  • Solving your sexual problems, such as ED, will help you feel more confident in bed.

“It’s a jungle out there.” That’s what I hear over and over from single friends and clients. Mobile apps have changed the dating game — for better and for worse. Even if you are just looking for a one-night stand, respecting sexual etiquette is critical to leaving a good impression.

How the Dating World Has Changed

When the Tinder app became available in 2012, nobody could have imagined its impact on the world of dating. People use apps today to find romantic partners or casual lovers. There are specialized services for people of a specific faith or sexual preference

30 percent of adult Americans say they have used a dating app. For 12 percent, the adventure led to a committed relationship or marriage. An upward trend is expected to continue. Many of us move around quite a bit, changing cities or even countries in the search for better opportunities. Online apps can provide a great way to meet new people.

But you’ve heard it before: All that glitters is not gold. The illusion of a constant supply of potential partners can be very misleading.

What 21st Century Singles Complain About

Lying is a big concern in online dating. It’s so tempting and easy to post a photo of yourself from 15 years ago or pretend you’re not married. According to research, 57 percent of people lie when using dating services on the internet.

Communication is another problem. Online anonymity makes some users forget basic etiquette, like ending a conversation in a polite way if you lose interest. Instead, they exercise ghosting, meaning they cut off all contact without an explanation.

From my conversations with single women, I noticed another worrying trend — lack of bedroom manners. It can take a range of forms, from plain annoying to infuriating. Common complaints include:

  • Inviting someone over to a messy apartment
  • Not caring for personal hygiene before sex
  • Not offering your guest something to drink or a snack
  • Trying to force unwanted sexual activity

It is important to remember that non-consensual sex is a form of violence. Some countries, such as Sweden, regard all sexual contacts without explicit consent as rape. Being a good lover and decent human means respecting the boundaries of other people.

Sexual Etiquette 101

Regardless of your current goals in life — whether looking for a future spouse or exploring sexuality — good manners are always in order.

You may be the best lover in the world, but if you don’t treat your partners with respect, you will not be remembered well. Here are a few things to think about:

  • Be truthful. When chatting with someone, make sure to be friendly. If you decide you don’t want to continue the conversation, thank that person, say goodbye, and move on. No need to explain. You can say that you didn’t feel the chemistry. You wouldn’t want people ghosting you, so don’t do it to others.
  • Mind your table manners. When meeting for a date, be on time, don’t text at the dinner table (or check for new matches on the app!), and agree on how to split the bill.
  • Be a good host. If you expect to invite someone to your home, tidy it beforehand and change the sheets on the bed. Have some food and snacks in the fridge and something to drink. Hang a fresh towel in the bathroom so that your guest can take a shower. Making love in a nice environment creates a better experience.
  • Plan for safe sex. Discuss safety before getting intimate. Condoms are a must. Talk about other things that will make you feel safer. Some people use latex barriers for oral contact. If you practice more “kinky” sex, talk about limits and safe words.
  • Remember that good sex is always consensual. If for some reason your partner decides she or he wants to stop, respect it. Anything else is violence.
  • Don’t be a postcoital jerk. After making love, thank your partner, hug if you like. If they want to leave in the middle of the night, make sure they get home safely by driving them back, walking them to the station, or ordering a taxi.
  • Make contact the next day. If you like the person, don’t make them wait for a message after your meeting. Send them a text the next day, thanking them and offering another date. If you decide not to continue, thank them for a nice time and wish them all the best.

Sounds easy, right? Then why do so many people not bother with dating etiquette?

Performance Anxiety Can Make Men Forget Their Manners

Dating apps have many advantages, but using them can be stressful. A cross-sectional online survey revealed that people who are active on swipe-based apps are more prone to depression, anxiety, and distress.

Those results are not surprising. Online, you are judged by your looks. You are keenly aware there are many competitors out there who are trying to attract the people you like.

And the online dating world is far from gender-balanced. According to a 2018 dating app study, men made up 73 percent of users in the U.S. Some countries have it even worse. For example, in Italy, only 9 percent of women were using online dating tools.

With all this judgment, competition, and pressure to perform in bed, some men forget their manners. To make sure you are getting and giving a good sexual experience, you have to be aware of your own patterns of behavior and be willing to change them.

Solve Your Sexual Problems and Avoid Stress

Another big reason why people get anxious in the bedroom and forget the basics is that they worry about performance. More young men are reaching for Viagra as insurance, fearing they may show symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

The more you know your body, the better you are able to manage any sexual dysfunctions, such as premature ejaculation or ED. Trying to solve your problems alone is the worst possible option and can be dangerous
