The average price of Cialis as-needed moved higher in February 2020, while the price for its generic alternative, tadalafil, edged slightly lower from its level in January 2020.
The average prices of high-strength Cialis (10 to 20 mg) and its generic equivalent, tadalafil, moved in opposite directions in February 2020, according to data from Secure Medical’s monthly review of prescription drug prices.
The price of a 20 mg tablet of Cialis inched 0.04 percent higher, climbing from $74.75 in January to $75.05 in February 2020. However, its February price was still 3.9 percent lower than its price of $78.06 in July 2019.
Tadalafil Price Slips
The price of 20 mg tadalafil, by contrast, was down 11 cents from $18.01 in January to $17.90 in February, a change that barely registers on a percentage basis. However, the 52.4 percent drop from its July 2019 price of $37.60 was much more dramatic.
These higher-strength tablets of Cialis and tadalafil are prescribed for use as needed. They are to be taken 60 to 120 minutes before the expected start of sexual activity. Their effects can last for up to 36 hours, which has earned them the nickname of the weekend drugs. Take one by 9 p.m. on Friday, and the effects probably won’t wear off until 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Recommended Starting Dose
For both Cialis and tadalafil as-needed, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg. However, because prices for 10 and 20 mg tablets are the same, many users buy the higher-strength tablets and divide them in half to yield two doses for the price of one. The prices quoted in this blog post are for the 20 mg tablets of both Cialis and tadalafil.
A separate blog post will look at the price trends for lower strength Cialis and tadalafil (2.5 to 5 mg), which are generally prescribed to be taken on a daily basis. Taken faithfully every day, these drugs promise that the user will be able to get and keep an erection whenever the time is right.
Tracking Prices Month to Month
Here’s a look at month-to-month movements of 20 mg Cialis prices during the period from July 2019 to February 2020. The average price fell 2.9 percent from $78.06 in July to $75.83 in August where it held through September. In October and November, Cialis’s price inched 0.03 percent higher to $76.05. It fell to $75.56 in December and $74.75 in January before recovering to $75.05 in February.
The average price of tadalafil 20 mg fell sharply from $37.60 in July 2019 to $27.47 in August, a drop of 26.9 percent. Over the next few months, its price rose 4.4 percent to $28.67 in September, fell slightly to $28.37 in October, climbed to $29.07 in November and dropped 6 percent to $27.33 in December 2019. It then fell a whopping 34.1 percent to $18.01 in January 2020 before slipping an additional 11 cents to $17.90 in February.
Future Direction Uncertain
While the overall price trend for both Cialis and tadalafil as-needed has been down over the past eight months, the decrease has been far greater for tadalafil than for Cialis. A review of these prices and other market factors offers little insight into the likely future direction of these prices.
