We tracked down several relationship experts, most of whom are either certified as such or doctors, and asked them the best way for someone to successfully meet someone to whom they are attracted. So-called pick-up lines are often not the way to go, according to the experts. The consistent message we heard most often was that potential suitors should just be themselves in situations when they are going to approach someone for the first time. My best pick up lines don’t feel like pick up lines. The sweetest pick up lines are the ones that are straightforward, honest, and hold no expectation other than to make the recipient feel good. Sincerity is key. Cheesy pickup lines are a turn-off. Sexual pickup lines will make most women run for the hills. Here’s a line that would work well for a grounded person looking to connect in a real way. "Hi. I think you have a great smile. I sense an intelligence behind those lovely eyes."

My favorite advice to guys to start talking to a girl is to ask, “What’s your favorite color? It’s a totally random question that someone always knows the answer to and will be curious why it is asked, so will likely answer. Then it’s up to the guy to steer the convo, “Why do you like that color?”

First, don’t be afraid to let someone know you’re interested. Then, smile and be yourself. It sounds cliche but if you think about it, it’s so true. How can you connect if you’re trying to be someone your not? Let the other person connect with who you really are. If they don’t like that, you would want to move on to someone who does anyway.

When they are out and about we tell them the best way to approach a man or woman is to find something to compliment them about. Pick up lines are usually either comical or a turn off, and they can drop a conversation in a heartbeat.

Ladies, if you catch a man’s eye, smile and connect with brief eye contact – just 2-3 seconds before turning away gracefully. If you catch him looking over again, then give him the brief, coy over the shoulder glance. You can always play you’re your hair or fiddle with your jewelry for added flirtation, signaling you are available. After 2-3 exchanges like this, chances are he will approach you to strike up a conversation.

I think pick up lines are bogus. I go with Olivia Munn when she says the best pick up line is, "Hey, my name is Jeff." Simple. Sweet. To the point. No attempt to be anything but genuine. And to keep the conversation going, notice what the other person is doing and wearing. If a girl’s at a club, ask her what her favorite song is to dance to. Be alert! Try to be yourself and if they’re not feeling you after a minute, don’t try harder. Just cut your losses and move on.
