Price differentials between the lowest and highest prices for generic erectile dysfunction medications are far greater than those for brand-name ED drugs. Shop wisely to ensure you get your very best deal.

Looking for the very best bargains when it comes to erectile dysfunction medications? If so, it pays to shop around for the lowest-priced generic equivalents of the best-known brand-name ED drugs.

Close examination of the price range for sildenafil, the generic equivalent of Viagra, and tadalafil, Cialis’s generic equivalent, reveal the gap can be fairly dramatic. This is especially true when compared to the much narrower price range between prices for these generics’ brand-name counterparts. These price comparisons were made using data from the October 2019 edition of the prescription drug price review that is conducted monthly by Secure Medical.

Price Differential of $16.32

For example, October 2019 prices for 100-milligram sildenafil at conventional prescription drug retailers ranged from a low of $14.78 (CVS and Target) to a high of $31.10 (Publix). This is a price differential of $16.32 for this highest-strength tablet of sildenafil, which can be split to yield two 50-milligram doses — the recommended starting dose for the drug.

By contrast, the price range between the lowest and highest prices for the same-strength tablet of Viagra was only $6.04 — from a low of $71.47 (Publix) to a high of $77.51 (Walgreens and Rite Aid).

Same Pattern Seen for Tadalafil

Much the same pattern was seen when calculating the price range for tadalafil, the generic equivalent of Cialis, the second most popular ED drug. Among conventional retailers — those that operate brick-and-mortar stores — prices for 20-milligram tadalafil ranged from a low of $21.83 (CVS and Target) to a high of $40.41 (Walmart) in October 2019. This is a price differential of $18.58, just $3.25 less than the lowest posted price for the generic medication.

Once again, the price differential for brand-name Cialis at those same retailers was far less dramatic. Prices for 20-milligram Cialis ranged from a low of $72.93 (Publix) to a high of $76.18 (Walgreens and Rite Aid), a difference of only $3.25.

Generics Subject to Strict Rules

For those who may be concerned that they’re settling for less in choosing the generic equivalents of the brand-name ED drugs, strict regulations ensure that generics work as well as brand-name drugs. U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations require that generics “use the same active ingredients as brand-name medicines and work the same way, so they have the same risks and benefits as the brand-name medicines.”

Posted prices for both brand-name and generic ED medications may be a bit higher at online prescription drug services such as eDrugstore.com. However, those prices cover a good deal more than just the medication itself. Built into eDrugstore’s prices are added-value services that you won’t find at conventional pharmacy retailers.
