Stendra Is unlikely to face direct generic competition for a few more years. However, its price has softened slightly, possibly a reflection of the competition from lower-cost generic versions of other ED drugs.
The summer of 2019 has seen a slight softening in the prices of the erectile dysfunction drug Stendra, but no big price drop can be expected in the foreseeable future. The average price of the drug, according to the Secure Medical monthly price review, went from $70.60 in July to $65.91 in September.
Stendra won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in late April 2012, making it the latest of the brand-name erectile dysfunction drugs to hit the market. As such, it is unlikely to face direct generic competition anytime soon. In fact, the first of its many U.S. patents won’t expire until 2023, which means no generic version is likely before that date.
How Stendra Compares
Like most of its competitors, including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Staxyn, Stendra is a drug that is to be taken on demand a short time before the anticipated start of sexual activity.
Stendra, however, sets itself apart from its ED drug competitors with its quick-acting effects. It often becomes effective in as little as 15 minutes after it’s taken. For most other drugs, the onset of effects ranges from 30 to 120 minutes.
When it comes to duration of effects, Stendra bests Viagra, Levitra, and Staxyn on that front, because its effects generally last six hours or more. However, it comes nowhere near the 36 hours of effectiveness boasted by high-strength Cialis. Low-strength (2.5 and 5 milligrams) Cialis is designed to be taken daily to ensure that users can get and keep an erection whenever the moment is right.
Metuchen Pharmaceuticals, the New Jersey-based company licensed to manufacture and sell Stendra in the United States, went to court in late 2018 to stop a Texas-based compounding pharmacy from selling what Metuchen claims is a knock-off of Stendra. Litigation on this matter is continuing.
Side Effects Mild and Short-Lived
Although some Stendra users might still experience side effects from the drug, one of its key selling points, according to Metuchen, is the mildness of such side effects and the speed with which they disappear. Also, Stendra can be taken with or without food, another attractive feature. These factors, coupled with its rapid onset of action and somewhat longer duration of effect, has helped the drug to capture a small but dedicated following
The recent softening in Stendra prices might reflect the competitive pressures it is experiencing from the lower-cost generic versions of other ED drugs that have made their debut since December 2017. These include generic formulations of Viagra (sildenafil citrate), Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil hydrochloride).
While none of these lower-cost generics offers the same features as Stendra, the allure of lower price could tempt some Stendra devotees to abandon ship.
