Strengthening the muscles of your core can help to improve sexual function and minimize the threat of erectile dysfunction. If you’re already suffering from ED, these exercises might help you to regain near-normal erectile function.

Regular readers of this blog recognize that regular exercise is essential to promote and support robust erectile function.

However, certain areas of the body deserve special attention, because they play key roles in male sexual function. Of these, the muscles of the core and the pelvic floor are perhaps the most important. Previous articles have dealt with pelvic floor exercises; this post addresses the importance of strengthening core muscles.

What Are the Core Muscles?

The core muscles include the abdominals, back muscles, and those of the hips and glutes.

An online article from Healthbeat, a publication of Harvard Medical School, describes the core muscles as “the sturdy central link in a chain connecting your upper and lower body.” Allow that link to weaken, and the adverse effects are reflected both above and below.

Of the core’s role in sexual intercourse, AskMen.com says the muscles of the core are “the stars of the show. These muscles not only control your stamina and vigor when thrusting, but the stronger these muscles are, the more ejaculatory control you’ll have.”

Try These Exercises

Now that the importance of the core muscles to sexual function has been established, it’s time to take a look at some of the exercises that can help you to get those muscles in tip-top shape. MayoClinic.org suggests the following:

Abdominal Crunch: Lie on your back with your feet placed on a nearby wall so that both your knees and hips are bent at 90-degree angles. With your arms crossed on your chest, tighten the muscles of your abdomen. Then raise your head and shoulders off the floor, holding that position for three deep breaths. Return to your original position and then repeat.

Bridge Exercise: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Tighten your abdominal muscles and slowly raise your hips until they are aligned with both your knees and shoulders. Maintain that position for three deep breaths, after which you can return to your original position.

Modified Plank: While lying flat on the floor on your stomach, raise your body until the bulk of your weight is resting on your forearms and knees. With your shoulders directly above your elbows, align your head and neck with your back. Tighten your abdominals. Increase resistance on your core by pressing your elbows and knees toward one another but without moving them from their positions on the floor. Hold for three deep breaths, and then return to your original position.
