When allergies strike, they can be hard to battle.  The itchy eyes, stuffy nose and congestion can leave a person feeling awful.  These symptoms are even worse for the younger generation but now Nasacort, a widely popular nasal spray used to fight allergies, has been approved in children aged 2-5 years of age.

“We welcome this new treatment option for our very young patients.” said lead investigator Dr. Steven Weinstein, Director of Allergy and Asthma Specialist Medical Group in Huntington Beach, California.  “Nasacort AQ Nasal Spray has been proven effective for the age groups two to five years to relieve their allergy symptoms.”

Details of the study:
A total of 464 patients volunteered for this study.  All of the patients were diagnosed with year-round allergies, and have dealt with them for at least one year.  Over the course of four weeks, the group was split; half were given Nasacort and the other a placebo.  Every morning the children participating in the study rated their allergy symptoms based on their nasal stuffiness, discharge and itching over the course of 24 hours.

The results:
After the month long study the results showed patients treated with Nasacort showed a reduction in symptoms.  “The results speak for themselves,” Weinstein said.  “I believe that this medication will help some of the worst young allergy sufferers.”

Allergy statistic from American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology:
*A nationwide survey found that more than half (54.6%) of all U.S. citizens test positive to one or more allergens.
* In a recent survey, over 50% of homes had at least six detectable allergens present.
* Allergic diseases affect as many as 40 to 50 million Americans.
* In 2006, 8% of adults and over 9% of children had been diagnosed with hay fever in the past 12 months.
*There were more than 12 million physician office visits because of allergic rhinitis in 2006.
*Allergic rhinitis affects between 10% and 30% of all adults and as many as 40% of children.
