Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, may be able to help improve sexual function in women suffering from sexual arousal disorder. This form of sexual dysfunction is widely seen in postmenopausal women and women who have undergone hysterectomies.
An article posted at ABCNews.com explores the findings of a study conducted by sisters Jennifer and Laura Berman. Jennifer is a urologist, and Laura is a sex therapist. The sisters stress that sildenafil use is unlikely to produce positive results in women whose lack of interest in sex is caused by psychological or relationship issues. Rather, it appears to work best in women who once enjoyed sex but now find that sexual activities produce less satisfaction than they once did.
Sildenafil Gets High Marks in Study
The Bermans recruited 202 postmenopausal or posthysterectomy patients who exhibited symptoms of sexual arousal disorder. Such symptoms include difficulty in becoming sexually aroused, a lack of natural vaginal lubrication, and a failure to achieve orgasm. Roughly half of the study participants were given sildenafil, while the others received a placebo. All took notes after each sexual encounter. Those taking sildenafil reported significantly improved sexual satisfaction, compared with those who took placebo.
Interviewed by ABC News, Laura Berman said that sildenafil “increases blood flow to the genital area, increases the sensation of warmth, tingling, and fullness.” Sildenafil has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in women, although individual doctors could prescribe the drug off-label for female patients.
