Eli Lilly & Company’s patent on Cialis is scheduled to expire before the end of the year.

A generic alternative to Cialis is due to make its American debut in late September 2018. This is good news for consumers who soon will have a wider choice of lower-priced ED medications to choose from. Generic alternatives to Viagra hit the U.S. market in December 2017.

Zydus Cadila, one of the largest drug manufacturing companies in India, recently received tentative approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin marketing its generic version of Cialis in late September 2018. According to a report posted at Ultra.news, Zydus will manufacture the Cialis generic in its plant at Moraiya, a suburb of Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Cialis Generic Was Predicted for 2017

Many market observers had expected a generic formulation of Cialis to debut on the U.S. market in late 2017, but Cialis patent-holder Eli Lilly & Company negotiated a 10-month extension of its market exclusivity on the drug.

As previously noted, the first generic versions of Viagra — marketed as sildenafil citrate, the name of Viagra’s active ingredient —  were introduced in December 2017. The availability of lower priced alternatives to brand-name ED drugs put price pressure on the brand-name medications, including not just Viagra but Cialis as well.

However, instead of lowering its price on Viagra to better compete with the generics, Pfizer in early July 2018 raised prices on 100 of its brand-name drugs, including Viagra. Strong criticism from President Trump persuaded Pfizer to put those price hikes on hold until the president has time to roll out his plan for health care reforms.
