Acne, breakout, skin, red bumps, blackheads, pimplesAs hormones kick in during the teenage years the awkwardness of rapid growth and a changing voice are compounded by the arrival of dreaded acne.  Many teens have to suffer through the embarrassment of these painful red bumps on the face and neck.  For most teens they go away with time, but for many adults acne remains a constant problem throughout their lives.

The dreaded acne of teenage years may be difficult to control, but as an adult there are many things you can do to prevent and cure your acne.  Below are 5 steps to prevent acne.

Step 1: Wash Your Face

Although some research shows that cleanliness is not directly related to acne, it is generally understood that having dirty skin provides a fertile environment for bacteria to grow.  Dirt and excess oil on your skin causes clogged pores, which in turn leads to break-outs.   Try using a face wash that is specially formulated for acne treatment

Step 2: Apply Acne Medication

For this step you should purchase an over-the-counter acne gel or cream containing benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria in the pores and can help remove and prevent excess oil. After washing your face, take a small amount of the cream and massage lightly into the pores until it is no longer visible.

For more severe acne, you may want to visit a dermatologist for a prescription strength cream such as Retin-A.

Step 3: Use a Moisturizeracne, breakouts, clean face, Retin-A, acne prevention, acne cream

Acne cleansers and medication often dry out the skin, so it becomes very important to usea high quality facial moisturizer.  If you forget to use a moisturizer you will begin to notice your skin turning red after a few weeks, and it will eventually begin to peel.  This can be easily prevented by using a light moisturizer after each time you wash and apply acne cream.  Just be careful not to apply too much or it could actually cause more acne to appear.

Step 4: Exfoliate

Once a week or so you will want to use an exfoliant to help scrub the dead skin cells from your face.  Shaving does a great job of this for men on the cheek and jaw areas, but not the upper cheek and forehead.   An excess of dead skin cells can clog pores, trap bacteria and lead to break outs. Most exfoliants will contain salicylic acid.

 Step 6: Eat Healthier

Mix a good amount of fruits and vegetables into your diet.  Junk food and sweets cause your body to secrete more oil which comes out your pores and causes them to clog.  The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables will give your immune system a boost, strengthening your protection against acne-causing bacteria.
