Do Genetics Determine if You’ll Develop ED?

Word cloud with Genetics, Life, Codes, health and biology.
The many mysteries of human genetics are still being unraveled.

Are you worried that your genes have predestined you for an unavoidable struggle with erectile dysfunction? While you may be genetically predisposed to develop certain diseases or disorders that can lead to ED, this question seems more a matter of nurture over nature. In other words, the critical determinant of your future erectile health is not in your genes but rather in the lifestyle choices that you make, according to medical experts.

TV doctor Mehmet Oz, an eminent New York City-based cardiologist, puts it this way: “ . . . Genes are not destiny. The science is very clear: Eating a healthy diet, exercising, and avoiding bad habits such as smoking can lower your risk for erectile dysfunction and other medical conditions.”

In a study published in the German-language medical journal “Herz” (Heart), two pharmacologic scientists said that in studies of ED patients and their genotypes, “There was no evidence for influence of the genotypes on the susceptibility to develop ED.” The researchers did, however, note a genotype-related response to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. A better understanding of that relationship may someday help pharmacologists to develop medications that are more broadly effective.

Despite the absence of any hard evidence that ED itself is hereditary and thus directly influenced by the genes you’re born with, certain medical conditions associated with ED have been shown to be hereditary in nature. However, as Dr. Oz suggests, the lifestyle choices you make can significantly decrease or increase the risk that such genetic predisposition actually becomes a fact of your life.
