The limited studies that have been done are promising, but hyperbaric oxygen therapy is impractical for most people. Fortunately, prescription drugs like Viagra successfully address ED in the majority of men who try it.
A recently published study offered some promising news for erectile dysfunction patients whose ED symptoms have failed to respond to other forms of treatment. The study found that men diagnosed with ED showed significant improvements in erectile function after multiple sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT.
The study, published online by the “International Journal of Impotence Research,” was conducted by a team of Israeli researchers, most of whom are affiliated with the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research in Israel. Researchers found that treatment with HBOT actually helped to induce the development and growth of new blood vessels in the penis, thus easing the symptoms of ED caused by insufficient blood flow to that organ.
Study’s Findings Spelled Out
Specifically, the Israeli study found that 30 men with a mean age of 59.2 and diagnosed with ED for roughly four years experienced significantly improved erectile function after 40 daily hyperbaric sessions of 90 minutes each. For each session, the patient was confined to a sealed total body chamber where he was able to breathe 100 percent oxygen, which is said to enhance the body’s natural self-healing abilities. In the end, about 80 percent of the men reported favorable results.
While the Israeli study’s findings are good news for men who’ve exhausted other ED treatments to no avail, HBOT may not be a practical solution for most ED sufferers. According to Hyperbaric Medical Solutions, the cost for each hyperbaric session ranges from $250 to $450, meaning that the total bill for 40 sessions would run somewhere between $10,000 and $18,000. Because hyperbaric treatment of ED is an experimental procedure at this point, it’s doubtful that it would be covered by insurance.
HBOT is also associated with some adverse side effects, which can include claustrophobia, a drop in blood sugar, worsening of cataracts, and other vision changes, according to University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
