Among the various treatment options for erectile dysfunction are a handful that work well in combination.

Penile implants, multicomponent devices that are surgically implanted, offer men with erectile dysfunction the ability to achieve an erection virtually on demand. Extremely effective in their own right, these prosthetic devices can produce even more satisfying results when used in combination with Viagra or its generic equivalent sildenafil citrate.

Penile implants typically consist of two flexible cylinders, a pump, and a reservoir filled with saline solution. The cylinders replace the corpora cavernosa, dual chambers of spongy erectile tissue within the shaft of the penis, while the pump is often placed in the scrotum, and the reservoir is implanted beneath the skin of the lower abdomen. When an erection is desired, you activate the pump, which moves fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders in the penis. As these cylinders are filled, erection is achieved.

Use of Implants Is Declining

Despite their virtually fail-safe solution to the problem of ED, penile implants declined sharply in popularity in the early 21st century. A study published in the July 2015 issue of “The Journal of Sexual Medicine” looked at the treatment options chosen by more than 1.7 million men diagnosed with ED. It found that the use of penile implants had declined from a rate of 4.6 percent in 2002 to 2.3 percent in 2004. The data was considered surprising in light of the almost 100 percent effectiveness of the penile implants and the improved surgical techniques for implanting them.

For men who have penile implants or who are considering them, a 2001 study in “Urologia Internationalis” found that men with implants significantly increased their sexual satisfaction by taking sildenafil prior to sexual activity. Study participants filled out the International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire both before and after sildenafil use. Post-sildenafil responses to the questions specific to sexual satisfaction indicated sharply higher satisfaction than before the supplemental use of the oral ED medication.
