A study out of Sweden found that men who took Viagra or other oral erectile dysfunction drugs after a heart attack were 40% less likely to be hospitalized for heart problems later.

Not just about sex

According to an article on Health24.com, the study looked at 43,000 men over a three-year period who had been hospitalized for a heart attack. Of those men, 7% were given drugs for erectile dysfunction. Some of the men took oral ED drugs, such as Viagra, while others took the injectable erectile dysfunction drug alprostadil.

These different erectile dysfunction drugs helped the researchers determine that it wasn’t just more sex that kept men healthier longer. The men who took the oral erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra were 38% less likely to die during the follow up than the men who took alprostadil or no erectile dysfunction drug at all.

How Viagra helps the heart

The researchers have a theory about why Viagra and other oral erectile dysfunction drugs may protect the heart. They think that Viagra and the other PDE5 inhibitors reduce the stiffness in arteries and increase blood flow to the heart.

Of course, as with any drug, it’s vital that you talk to your doctor before taking Viagra or any other erectile dysfunction drugs. Since you need a prescription, it’s likely you’ll be required to have a conversation about other prescription and nonprescription drugs you take, as well as legal and illegal recreational drugs, vitamins, minerals and supplements. This is important because Viagra can interact with other drugs, causing an unsafe drop in blood pressure.

You’ll also need to discuss your past and current medical history, especially anything related to the heart, blood pressure or an irregular shaped penis.

Although Viagra does have some side effects, most men report that they’re so minor that they continue taking Viagra anyway.
