Researchers in several countries are conducting trials to determine if taking a daily pill could prevent HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. This experimental preventative strategy is called Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP uses anti-retrovirals to protect HIV-negative people from becoming infected with the virus. So far, studies have shown that PrEP helped to reduce the risk of contracting HIV in non-human primates. The anti-retroviral drug tenofovir was tested on young women in Ghana in 2007, and while results showed the drug to be safe for use, there was no indication that PrEP was effective in preventing new infections.
As many as 15,000 people are expected to participate in the trials of this method of preventative treatment. Effectiveness and safety results could be released by early next year.
