Viagra may do more than help your erectile dysfunction.

According to a piece in the British Journal of Pharmacology, erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra, are finding clinical uses for a spectrum of health issues.

Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs work by dilating blood vessels, targeting a certain cellular pathway involved in both regular physiological functions and the pathophysiology of a variety of diseases.

Already, Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs are being used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and lower urinary tract infections.

EurekAlert! reports that off-label treatments currently include using Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs for diabetes and cancer.

Viagra for erectile dysfunction

Viagra is currently the most popular erectile dysfunction drug in the world. It’s also the most counterfeited, which makes it even more vital that men seeking Viagra do so via a prescription from a doctor.

Some of the fake Viagra that’s been seized has contained such toxins as road paint, detergent, and even arsenic.

Why Viagra requires a prescription

There are several reasons that the FDA requires a prescription for Viagra. First, it helps ensure that the Viagra you’re getting is both effective and pure. Second, a doctor will be able to discuss any current medications you’re taking that could interfere with Viagra, including dangerous contraindications.

Nitrates, for example, can cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure if taken with Viagra. Men who take medicine for pulmonary hypertension or alpha blockers also shouldn’t take Viagra. Other drug warnings include those for men taking blood thinners, certain barbiturates, certain medications for seizures, beta-blockers, erythromycin and HIVE protease inhibitors, among others.

A doctor can also go over side effects that some men experience when taking Viagra, including a a headache, diarrhea, upset stomach, heartburn, flushing, muscle or back pain, vision changes, runny or stuffy nose, dizziness and difficulty falling asleep.

Most men report that these side effects are so minor that they continue taking the Viagra.
