Now, researchers believe they’re on the verge of developing a condom that couples will prefer.
The new condom
The next generation condom is made from hydrogels that feel better than latex and has the ability to do things like self lubricate, provide a dose of Viagra or Cialis, or respond to stimulation in a certain way.
The team from the University of Wollongong received one of 52 grants offered by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to create a condom that couples want to wear.
“If you make them so pleasurable that people can’t wait to put them on, then more people will use them, and we can hopefully stop the spread of disease. It’s as simple as that.”
Initial funding of $100,000 was given to grant winners to create a “stigma-free condom” in hopes that it could lead to global health benefits including the reduction of unplanned pregnancies and better prevention against STDs and HIV.
The research team is now in the testing phases, and plans to watch brain activity of couples using the condom to see if they’re preferred over latex.
The condom with a dose of ED medication
Researchers are still working on how the condom can deliver a dose of ED medication, but they believe it’s possible with the new material.
There’s no partnership established with a pharmaceutical company to create a liquid version of Viagra or Cialis to incorporate into the condom, but the creation is still in its infant stages.
