There is growing concern about the use of Viagra as a party drug. An increasing number of young men are combining “the little blue pill,” which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, with Ecstasy.
This combination of the drugs is known in the club scene as “Sextacy.”
When the drugs are combined men claim they have a euphoric feeling. Experts say this new cocktail is more dangerous than young men realize.
A dangerous combination
When Viagra and Ecstasy are combined, the two interact to cause “serotonin syndrome,” according to scientists from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre in Australia.
Serotonin is known as the happy hormone, which creates pleasurable feelings. But, there is such a thing as too much serotonin. High levels of this hormone can cause confusion, disorientating, hallucination and tremors.
In serious cases, doctors say the syndrome can cause seizures, an irregular heartbeat and may even lead to a coma.
Viagra being combined with other meds
It’s not just Ecstasy that young adults are mixing with Viagra. Experts at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles say they’re treating cases of young adults combining Viagra with “poppers” of amyl nitrate, a drug that’s prescribed to heart patients.
The combination of these drug is even more dangerous, say doctors.
“Viagra and nitrates are never to be used together,” Dr. Marilyn K. Volker, Sexologist an Associate Fellow of The American Academy of Clinical Sexologists says. “People have died from doing that.”
The underlying cause
Why are so many young people creating Viagra cocktails? Psychologists say young men are under more stress today than ever before. In addition, young men are often introduced to pornography at an early age, which experts say causes men to put unrealistic expectations on their performance.
Doctors warn that Viagra is only to be used to treat erectile dysfunction, which must be diagnosed by a doctor.
